It is musical chairs. Marner knew that with camps open, somebody was going to sign soon. If he'd held on too long, he ran the real risk that Point signs for $9 Million. If that happens, there's no way he cracks the $10 M mark.
Good news for some other RFAs, this deal gets them an extra bit of salary leverage. |

They should all sit the season the spoilt brats. If i was their GM I'd make them sit. |

If Mitch can put up 90 points per season the answer is yes, he is worth it. If he can be one of the major components to lead the team to a cup, then the answer is yes he is worth it. |

I don't see why. They have a lot of expensive contracts coming off the books after this season and they don't have any important RFAs that are going to command big money anytime soon (at least that I can see).
This will, however, put to the test the notion that you can win it all by having overwhelming offense and not much in the way of defense. I don't subscribe to that notion. |

Is he worth it? No, not based on everything we've already seen. For him to be worth it the Mitch Marner going forward will have to take a leap of epic proportions. The odds of that happening are pretty slim. Considering he's a whisker under an accomplished center like Taveres people would be fools to believe that Leaf fans won't turn on Marner if his pay and play aren't at the same level. Remember...Jason Blake, Jeff Finger, Pavel Kubina, David Clarkson, Owen Nolan etc etc. They may not have been as good or as much of a fan favourite as Marner, but they didn't have salaries as disproportionate to results so far as Marner now has. |

Are you saying David Clarkson and Jeff Fingers' contract was more proportionately in line with their play than Mitch Marner will be? |

It's a mad world when possibly the worse UFA contract ever (Clarkson), is reacquired to become the LTIR relief that allowed this contract to happen.

Point probably gets $9mm+ for 5 years on his contract and Rantenen will get more. Both Toronto and TB are going to have huge Achilles Heels with their D because they won't be able to afford any (TB still has to give Sergachev a raise) unless they trade some of their Top 6 forwards to fit under the cap. Colorado still has to re-up Landeskog but they are in better shape... |

I was pretty sure they acquired Clarkson just to have the room to protect themselves from an offer sheet, should the need have arisen. |
