If we're talking hard line numbers, Nylander should be at 6, Marner at 9 and Matthews at 10. But the Leafs had to budge on these guys because of how important they are to the team. The Leafs are paying extra for future potential.

All the tough stuff is done with. Now they need Nylander to have a good year, move him for help on the blueline and start making Cup pushes.

- JohnFergusonJr

I would prefer they kept the cap hit, but added a year to all of their contracts. but yeah, I agree with those numbers.

Won't even touch the Nylander trade idea. Not against it, but I don't see it happening.
Dubas is going to push hard to sign Barrie and hope that between him and the kids in the pipe, we will have enough.

Part of the increase is his age. Marner isnt even in his prime and Tavares is. Yet both were as valuable and as good as the other. In 3-4 years marners contract will look like a steal compared to Tavares.
- Gunslinger

We’ll see is all either of us can say. Saying Marner will live up to it is just as reasonable as someone else saying he won’t. /shrug.

At this stage the leafs focus should be keeping Nylander and hoping by next season Sandin is the dman you would have traded Nylander for.

I agree. I'd take all of them at their cap hits for max 8 year deals. But these guys want to be UFAs and come back to the table again ASAP. Especially if they win awards and/or Cups.

Barrie is going to want 8 and he's not worth it. Rielly will want the same or more and he will be worth it.

Interesting note from theScore; Drew Doughty doesn't seem happy in LA anymore. Said the team has been poop since they last won the Cup. He's basically wasted 4 years of his prime and maybe if they suck again this year he asks for a deal. Would you rather have Barrie at 8 or Doughty? Enter Nylander, plus some significant sweeteners and the Leafs might have the ingredients to make a serious move to fill the last hole on their team.

I agree that it’s manageable. It’s not atrocious but it’s not a great signing either, by any measure. I don’t put a lot of faith into one season where you put JT onto his line and see a 25 point increase.

Let’s see if he can live up to it or has he handcuffed his team if he falls back down to earth. Is last season the norm or an anomaly.

- RafiDRW

JT is a a fantastic player, and I don't think he would be considered overrated as a player, but I think people overrate his contributions to Marners numbers. Did he help? For sure. But I think Marner got 25 points more because of the growth in his game. I watched way too many goals last year where Marner did all the work and all JT had to do was poke it into an empty net. Tavares can do that though, which was something Bozak never could.

True enough. I just don’t know if I see him getting 110 points a season like some have been predicting.

There's more evidence to suggest he does than he doesn't. It's not like he was a nobody, scored 20 points, then 90, then 30 and has been all over the map. His progression as a player since junior has been steady and fairly predictable. Even if JT is the reason he's scoring 90 points (he's not the sole reason but let's say he is for the sake of argument), JT is signed for 6 more years so if that chemistry continues, it's 6 more years of 90+ points as he enters his prime.

Yes. Plus one of Barrie or Muzzin. Honestly, the only important player I worry about losing due to CAP constraints is Andersen. I'm really curious to see how that will play out, when the time comes.

Not sure it made a lot of difference. What choice did Marner have?

Really? Since the leak not even a full week has gone by and all of a sudden he signs???

22 year old kid hearing all the hate...."(frank) this, I don't need and extra $500k and one less year. I'm signing."

Don't kid yourself, he could have held out. You could easily make the argument that his dad and agent probably wanted him to hold out longer.

Public opinion matters to some...ie: endorsements, etc.

And that would be great if that progression continues. I hadn’t watched as many Leafs games last season as I did the last couple of years, so I may be out to lunch.

Doughty makes 11, but yeah between the two, Doughty is on a whole other level.
