Don’t try to reason with people on here. Marner at 10.8 is a STEAL.

Remember when Gardiner was a leaf and the media were telling us he was worth 7 mil on a long term contract?

They pump all of our players.

I am not a troll. I am happy like everyone else that Mitch is signed. But I believe that defence wins championships. I like our defence this year. But after this year it looks like Barrie will walk and possibly Muzzin? Hopefully our young guys will be ready to step in by then...

You can believe whatever you choose..

But there’s no template on how to win a cup. Sometime the team is stacked up the middle, sometime they have a strong blue-line.. sometimes a goalie steals it..

Have you seen the comments on twitter. I'm downright embarrased by some of our fans yet feeling justified I dont do social media apps. I dont understand the logic. In what way would fans have spent the Marner money more wisely? By signing Myers and Simmonds instead?

If the issue is paying the money to a guy who was 11th in league scoring before even being in his prime, I'd say that's a good "problem" to have.

- Gunslinger

Exactly. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on elite players, you pay what you have to to keep them. Fill in with guys on ELC’s and one year UFA’s for the rest.

He will if the media pump him the way they do all leaf players coming up for contract.

Honestly, I hope Dubas starts signing RFAs and UFAs for next year now, just to prevent them being told by the media they are worth 2 million more than they actually are.

- Leafs43

Dermott's not anywhere close to Werenski who just got 5. He's got to get healthy and he'll be 4-6 guy all year so he's not going to get the opportunity to earn that kind of contract.

I think it's a bit high for sure but I think he had a good argument that he's at least a bit better than Aho ...and the Leafs got that 6th year.

Aho at 6 years would have been somewhere between 9 and 9.5 AAV. I thought 10 would have been the ceiling on a 6 yr for MM but I think the new bosses may have promised to "repay" him those bonuses that Lou "robbed" him of. Who knows but it was a negotiating point.

- The Law

The bonuses couldn't have been that much? Anyway, it is what it is. I kinda wish the leafs had waited until September 15th to find out what the NHLPA does regarding the CBA. If they decided to pull out of the CBA, I think the leafs get way more negotiating power.

But ah well, I'm happy he is back. It just seems like we can never "win" a negotiation.

Bonuses were reported to be 4.8 million. So that's 800k per year over 6 years.

So 6 x 10 becomes ....6 x 10.8. Maybe ..?

I think these kids definitely didn't give an inch which sucks but now we push back and hold them to their contracts. It is what it is ...I like their chances to be one of the best teams over the next 3+ years.

You think Dubas paid him because he read something Feschuck or someone else wrote? Dubas sees Marner as key to this team’s success and paid him for it.

I think once you come to terms with the 11x8 or 11x7 number, the 10.9x6 number isn't _that_ terrible - but as I say, first you have to be willing to accept the numbers that were going around. I had felt that if he wanted a 6 year term that 9.5 was probably a good landing point with room to push up to 10.

With Matthews, I think most of felt that 10.5 was a realistic point for him on that term; we would have preferred something like 8x12.

So right now it feels like both Marner and Matthews are overpaid by $1m.

For all of the doom and gloom and woe begotten fans out there - even if they are both overpaid by $1m (and that's my opinion - Dom Luszczyszyn has models that say that these guys are underpaid) - that isn't the tipping point on whether we upgrade the Defense or not.

For the first time since the salary cap has come along we have numerous high quality players. We can and should take the time to enjoy it.

Tough options for the C.
Longest tenure and one of the best players on the team bodes well though.

JT and Auston - tough calls. Good thing I don't have to make the decision, and I'm pretty sure I won't really care who they choose out of those more than capable people.

No I think Dubas paid him because he didn't want to (and couldn't) enter the season with an unsigned Marner.

If Rantanen and Point sign for less than 9 million cap hit, then will you consider the fact that maybe Marner got more than his comparables?

Marner 10.893 mil, but he thinks he took a milly discount. 11.893 mil puts him 2nd in the nhl only 600k less than mcdavid.

But kucherov is scoring 40 goals and 123 pts at 9mil.

JT AM MM all way overpaid if we’re going to use Kucherov as an example.

Depends on the person I guess. Dubas dealt with what was in front of him. Dealt with a player who was on the team, and that players agent/dad etc etc.
Different circumstance and possible outcomes for every single RFA out there.

I agree. I'm not really putting this on Dubas. I just think the media pumping does change things.

I mentioned it before - but the Gardiner contract the media were yapping about was 7 mil on a long term deal. If the leafs had signed him for 6 mil, the media would have referred to it as a discount.

They pump our players relentlessly. I really do think it changes the players perception of their worth and makes negotiations more difficult.

.HOHO.

Depends on the length of term.

If Rantanen signs for 6 years and 8.5 then yes I will probably yell at the universe.

With Point we have to expect that TB will get a lower number ...they always do. I read a good article that basically showed how and why TB players were taking about 15% less on their contracts. Players care about what they net and unfortunately for the us that's worked in their favour.

Point could do 6 x 9.25 and it'd net about the same as MM.

I get a little giddy looking at the leafs lineup on capfriendly

So many good young players signed long term and no boat anchors
