Like BiggE said, I don't see how anyone can find a problem with the deal. But, this is hockeybuzz... - jmatchett383
The divide is in whether or not you believe Provorov has risen to a level of a true #1 defenseman or not in his first three years.
IMO he hasn't, even setting 2018-19 aside. His results have been way too partner-dependent for me to believe that this is a bargain.
It could turn out to be fair value if he can expand into some of that upside, or he could end up being a well-compensated #2 (or even 2nd-pair) dman.
You really don't think highly of him, do you? - jmatchett383
Overrated, I'd say. But I still stand behind him because he's home grown and has a lot of projectable qualities. |

I complete agree with you that Provorov has not risen to the level of a true #1 defenseman. Not yet but he has played at a high level with heavy responsibilities as a young player. He has the potential to get there. I don't agree that his results have been way too partner-dependent. |

People are acting like Provorov took some kind of hometown discount. He was awful last year. He's never going to be an offensive dynamo, nor will he be a total lockdown guy. - PLindbergh31
I think he’s excellent defensively but not lockdown yet. I don’t have a problem with this deal but it’s a max deal for a dman who is not going to be a pp option. He won’t be scoring anymore than 35-40 points max year in and out. It doesn’t matter how he gets to 35 points even or pp that’s his max and it’s a lot of money for a player that doesn’t do everything |
|
|
|
It wasn't a gross overpay, at least. I was kinda scared they'd cave and give him the Doughty contract.
At it stands, he needs to improve (a lot) more to even justify this deal. - Tomahawk
Yep. If he improves from years one and two, then the contract will be more than fine. If we see more of what we saw last year then it's an issue. Time will tell. |

Yea, with flyers new solid D men. I only see a Hägg the rag pairing that could make him look bad. |

That would be a pretty dumb move on Fletcher's part to start negotiating in the press. - MJL
It'd be nothing he wouldn't tell to the agent/players face.
It's not negotiating. It's a final offer. UFA's, when they get there, get to sit on the throne. He's not there yet.
Minny just did the same thing with Fiala. |

Making a final offer is a negotiation tactic. Telling it to the agent/players face is quite different than stating it publicly. It would be stupid. |

A true #1 guy should be capable of elevating a Chris Therien, Marc Methot, Mike Komisarek, Robert Hagg, etc, tho. That's part of what makes them so valuable. |

Provorov generates good offense at ES for a Dman so he sucks. TK generates good offense at ES so he’s awesome. Yup, Flyersbuzz at its best.
All kidding aside, Konecny is a good player, I think we can all see that. Lock him up for 5 or 6 years at 5.5 million or so and get him in camp. - BiggE
agreed and it helps the at the hit on Provy came in at a manageable level, lets face it, some were thinking 8 mil and we would have probably been ok with it. |

I did this roster back on 8/21, but only published it today. It had Provorov getting what he got, and TK getting 5 x $5.25m, which is probably more than Fletcher wants to pay.

I disagree, when you consider where the cap will most likely go in the next 3 years, the fact he had to be our #1 D from his first game due to the crap show we had on D and what he has done, this is not an overpay. The only way it is an overpay is if last season is every season for him going forward. |

not sure 6.5 is a AAV of a #1 D. is he our #1? Yes.

Devils must be kicking themselves they took Hischier. Yolk on their brows. - PLindbergh31
I can't officially speak for the team, but we've moved on to the Hughes - Kakko question.
I like Patrick and hope he has a good season. Gladly give you Zacha and a pick for him.

I see what you are saying but Chris Pronger did not do that at 21 years old. The team has more depth on the backend, a good group of forwards, a stable goaltender, let's see what Provy does this year. Not a true #1 yet but this season should be telling. |
