I (frank)ing hate Trudeau and Liberal left wing whiners.
I feel like the Conservatives are as (frank)ed up as the Democrats in the U.S. Neither can seem to find a leader that people actually want to vote for.

Hate em all, that said I feel dirty and the need to shower if I even see Ford's picture on the TV. Can't recall the slime level of guys like Mulroney,Harper or Ford by any other politicians of note in this country.

Once again, I'm gonna be stuck voting for "the less horrible" person/party in the choices we have. - Scabeh
The first part of this post is going to come off as tooting my own horn, so please bear with me.
I like to think that I'm a fairly well-educated individual. I boarded at a very good high school. Did a four year program at one of Ontario's better Universities (a math-based degree; not dance therapy or basket-weaving or anything like that). Followed that up with an MBA (and earned a plethora of finance-related accreditation's). I'm also a pretty social guy (read: I get drunk and talk to people), so I met a lot of people -- people who I would consider to be very bright and hard-working, etc. -- along the way. But I never met a single person in that history who was or has since gotten involved in the political realm. Not (frank)ing one . My takeaway? We aren't getting our best options up on that podium. And really, who in their right mind would want to? The pay is poop and you get your whole life put under a microscope. I certainly wouldn't want my dirty laundry getting aired out in front of the country, and we all have skeletons in our closet.

Leafs lunch They are talking about the unprecedented venom from the fanbase about Marner.
We can see it here also. It probably isn't really fair, but it is easy to see why people feel that way. Unfortunately, this isn't just about Marner this is about him being the focal point of a fanbase that has
1) Dealt with a gong show for the past 50+ years
2) Finally saw some real reason to get excited but then can't get out of the first round
3) Just endured a holdout where we feel the Leafs paid Nylander more than he is worth
4) Just saw Matthews sign a contract that is pretty damn un-team-friendly
5) Have seen players sign for reasonable amounts for other teams...
So all this baggage lands on Marner's head.

Aside from having your whole life in front of everyone, if you have the ability to be successful in business the opportunities are much more lucrative in the private sector.
Just a thought, but do you think having a higher salary and a package for their post politics life would bring in someone better? This is something I've loosely thought about

I think it could -- but I think in a perfect world you would have leaders who are doing it because they love the country and the people and want to make it even better and feel that they have the right ideas and know-how to make that happen, not for personal monetary gain. I just can't believe the current group of candidates is the best we can do, especially in a multi-party system. It's like eating at a restaurant with a huge menu but all the options still suck. |

I agree with all you said above.
The median household income in Canada is $107K
So for a guy to hold out because he might only make $9 M vs $11 M US and because his ego wants to make the same as Matthews is a bit much.
Marner was invisible for most of the Boston series after the first game.
Maybe if you have won a freaking playoff round and contributed to doing so you can hold out.
I say let the little twerp sit and let him come crawling back on the Leafs terms.
Good luck in Zurich Marner, enjoy the fondue and chocolate and your $300K salary for the Zurich Lions. |

No and I find it upsetting that Dubas & co. have been unable to sell the group on the narrative that if everyone agrees to take a little less of what they might be able to get it could be to the benefit of everyone.
Like this is (frank)ing Toronto guys -- Eugene Melnyk isn't writing the cheques here and this has nothing to do with trying to save money. We could afford to pay you even more than you are asking for and would gladly do it but unfortunately there is a salary cap and every dollar we pay you is a dollar we can't pay someone else to help put the best team on the ice around you and maximize our chances of winning a cup, which should be the ultimate goal here for everyone (and would only increase your marketability and ability to generate income for yourselves outside of hockey for years to come). |
