I’m wondering why so many are surprised that the Marner Camp is pushing Dubas on this negotiation? He caved with the last two deals and will do it again here. They know it. Doesn’t look good on the Marner camp publicly, but the business end is ugly sometimes.
He will sign by the start of the season, have a career year and probably retire a Leaf. We should try to remember the player that blocked two shots with his face in the final seconds of a playoff game to preserve a win. Just a thought.

I am too drunk to make sense of this....but i think it means nylander's caphit of ~10 last year was actually the number to get to 6.9 for the year.

But because of ltir, if marner signs during the year, marner's gross prorated caphit cannot be > total ltir space of ~10.5m

No.

It means that when they need to use the LTIR room, it does not prorate upwards the same way the first year cap hit prorates upwards.

It states what we all thought, it is unlikely they can let this go into the season or Marner has to keep taking less.

It also makes them really vulnerable to a "cheap" offersheet. The cap problem would be similar for most other teams though, and then Marner still has to want to play there... and why would he sign a "cheap" offersheet from another team. Any offersheet below the 4 firsts compensation is likely less than what the Leafs have offered. Unless he just wants to play elsewhere?

Finally, if the Leafs really don't want to see him walk, they scramble and make a trade to open up some cap. Those Kapanen/Johnsson contracts would be very easy to move.
