Well we were wrong. Pettersson got (frank)ed by having no arbitration rights.

They can probably squeeze a 23 man roster under the cap now

I’m fine with it. I hoped the Pens would do a cheap bridge deal. I was happy with him, but with such a small sample size I want to see more.

Now we can only hope that Riikola shows enough improvement to knock JJ out of the lineup.

Jeez... $875k for one year. I guess if space is somehow created before season's end, they can extend him with a little more generous offer.

Thats what I'm thinking too...so remind me again what has to happen here with them already like over the cap with him not signed yet? Send guys down and only ride a 22 man roster?

This was posted a couple of weeks ago and answers your question:

I was listening to Yohe on Madden today. He basically floated the same idea that many of us had. Rikki takes JJ's spot to make the pairings work. He came to this conclusion because "They tried to trade him this summer" and "JJ was scratched in the first playoff game".

He needs to read this board because a couple of us said the exact same thing 2 months ago.

I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but if a team wants him attached to a deal for JJ, he's as good as gone. He has the dubious distinction of being expendable to the Pens roster but still has value to other teams.

People keep saying this but for that to happen a team would either be interested in Rust for a real value of 7 mil (lol) or think JJ is a valuable piece in and of himself (double lol)

Does this mean JJ is sent down? I'll believe it when I see it. However, it would be a perfect way to gain $1 mil in needed cap space and provides an easy excuse so JR can save face and JJ won't get his feelings hurt.

But as bad as JJ was, Riikola wasn't any better. I do think there is a good chance Riikola improves this year and becomes the better option, though.

Well, it would most likely mean taking back a bad salary (like Rask at $4 mil for the next 3 years, for example) so it's a relatively minimal cap increase (~$3 mil), they get a decent player in return (Rust), and unload an undesirable contract of their own (Rask). Just one example. No, a team is not going to take on both with no salary going back the other way.

We already know what Rust can and can't do on the top line, so I'd like to see someone else get that chance. Kahun is my pick unless he plays on the 2nd line.
- Tojo.

Just curious, what is your projected lineup? People keep talking about wanting this player and that player in the top 6, but there are only so many spots and Guentzel and Galch have 2 of the 4 locked up, so that leaves only 2. As for the top 9, I would say that Bjug and Horny have 2 of those locked up, so that leaves 3 for the remaining. It's probably safe to say that Bleuger and Tanev are on the 4th line.

So 1 of Simon, Kahun, Rust and McCann has to be on the 4th line with ZAR as the 13th forward. While I like our forward depth, one can argue that one of those four players is a wasted asset (or "overqualified") to play on the 4th line and only getting ~10-12 minutes per night.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have a handshake deal for an extension in place pending a different handshake deal being consummated. Maybe that's too many handshake deals.

Price might go up with a good start, but yeah, I think they'll want to get an extension for Pettersson pretty quick when they can. Same with Murray. Then they can figure out the rest, which will be complicated.

Are you genuinely stupid? You realize speculation isn't what a journalist is professionally allowed to do. They either report through sources or facts or write an op ed
