Matthews is the superior player in all aspects. Points fluctuate for many of reasons... but matthews is a big offensive giant centreman who are much more difficult to get on ur team when they are young and entering/in their prime.
A couple years ago marner was dwindling on the 4th line being coddled and pumped up by martin... a year with a bit more confidence he did better... and another year with tavares whoe has notoriously made allstars out of sub par linemates and he has a career year leading the team. This doesn't equate into being compared to matthews, tavares or anyone else on the leafs. Take away the 11 x7 offer... offer him 8.5 - 9 for 3 and if he doesn't take it by opening night then he sits.
Look for a trade at the deadline... could get a good haul from a team not making the playoffs. |

i agree. I think this will be probably our best lineup to win a cup and sadly our best chance will be wasted because Babcock is still the coach IMO. - ToMaLe
Babcock gets in his own way constantly. This is not a hard group to coach at all. |

There's no need to get your jimmies all rustled up. Once JT starts his decline in a year or two, we'll see if Matthews can transition from a sheltered 2C to a true #1C. He has some work to do between now and then
Marner will definitely extend JTs window by a bit though, and he'll probably help Matthews look better once JT hits the wall.
Marner is definitely a stud |

A winger who has the same number of goals in his entire playoff career to date thinks he deserves the same as a player who scored the same number of goals in his very first NHL game. Sure..sounds fair. |

I'm trying to decide if you're really this bad at player evaluation or playing a bit. |

The answer is yes
Also no
Also Marner

A little hard to believe Mitch isn't involved up to his nards. No agent could pull this poop on their own volition. He deserves what Mathews and Tavares got. He is a more complete player than either of those two. I don't get the feeling he's bluffing. He deserves the dough. Pay the man. |

Can absolutely see Marner wanting as many $$$ as Mathews. Marner is the straw that stirs the Leafs - no question. Dangerous on EVERY line change. Can Auston say that?
Marner one of top players - period - in NHL. Why shouldn't he get top $$$s?
Centre or wing - does it really matter, he creates the Leafs offensive thrust, time and time again. |

Huh? Matthews scores more 5 on 5 goals than ANYONE with less TOI. The guy is a beast.

Goals? Is that everything? Mitch is absolutely one of the most exciting and effective players in hockey - right up there with the McDavids. Why shouldn't he have the same dough? Certainly Mathews is a great player - but who is more exciting, and just as effective - Mitch Marner!
Marner is a must watch when he is on the ice - every shift. Auston? At times. Certainly Mitch is at least an equal to Matthews. |

It's not just "Goals", 5 on 5 is the hardest to score and he's by far the best in the world since entering the NHL. There hasn't been this good of a 5 on 5 goal scorer in over 2 decades.
His per 60 points are elite as well, as is his posession stats and shot generation.
Eichel is the only non 30 goal scorer to ever get 10 million per. Mitch's career high is 26 goals.
If Mitch deserves 11.6+, then Rantanen deserves 12 per. |

He leads the Leafs because of Matthews' injuries. Matthews is a C and beats Marner in every advanced stat.
This "Only cracked 70 points once" is so lazy and stupid.
37 goals, 73 points in 68 games and 38th in usage among NHL centres. Leads the NHL in 5 on 5 goals since enttering the NHL (By far).
As you can tell by the NHls highest paid players, goals are a premium. Matthews is the most efficient goal scorer since Ovy entered the NHl 15 years ago. - RogerRoeper
McDavid was coming off a 30 goal 70 assist season when he signed the richest contact in the NHL. Marner is not far behind those numbers. If Marner played more selfishly, like Matthews, he would have more goals. Perhaps this is a lesson he is leaning now. Its not about winning or making great plays or helping your team, its about how many goals you score and nothing else. |

I am still stunned by that 3rd period.
It's funny how every summer Dubas trades Babcock's favouite players that he overuses.
WE have still yet to see the Leafs best lineup once under Babcock. - RogerRoeper
We know you are. You never shut the (frank) up about that or how Willy will live up to his contract. Never a different subject with you. |

Lol work to do...? He's already a better c than half of the #1 centres in the league. especially if u look just at points (like most of the marner / matthews comparable enthusiasts like to do). |

Not far behind, but behind. Behind in goals, behind in speed, behind in being dangerous, and behind in carrying an entire franchise on his back. There is no way in hell that Marner deserves McDavid money. |
