I assume many of these young players are expecting the cap to skyrocket in a few years, with a new TV deal, expansion etc, on the horizon.

Even if it only goes up by a couple of million between those 5th-7th years, it's still a great move because Matthews/Marner would have amazing leverage as pending UFA's after 5 years.

Also gives them a chance to leave if they prefer playing in the states with less attention since the TO hoc key media is insane. Matthews goes on a 3 game pointless streak or 5 games without a goal and then the talk not the town is "what's wrong with Matthews?!"

Oh for sure, gives these players a shot at another big contract, in a city of their choosing.
I could see some star players, being moved, when they are reaching the end of their 2nd contract.
I doubt many teams are going to want to have a top caliber player bolt, like Tavares, and have nothing to show for it.

Absolutely. Matthews ain't different than most Americans they don't want to be in Canada long-term. Gaudraeau, Boeser, Matthews and I'm sure a host of other Americans will be gone to the States when their next contract is up.

Thats the word. Most RFA's will take less money for the shorter term but TO already gave Matthews money/term that Marner doesnt think is undeserving of himself.

TO is (frank)ing the whole market up. Throw a kings ransom at JT... then they have to treat AM as well.... and MM is every bit the player that AM is... and the whole market sits by idly waiting for TO to make their next move.

I'm a little late with the blog today, because I was at the media availability at the arena this morning, asking questions that earned deep-thought answers like "Yes."
