I think the rule typically exists to protect teams that draft Euro players from having the player just "wait it out" overseas so they can be free agents and sign elsewhere. This doesn't seem like the intended purpose but at least the Devils won't just lose him for nothing (I think).

I'd think if i was a team, I'd try to trade the Devils like a 4th for his rights even if I knew there was 100% chance he'd be over there for awhile. You have to figure at some point those guys are going to want to come back.

I'm not sure if you read it, but there was a good Forbes article about how Kovy's KHL gambit backfired spectacularly.

Yeah it's a low-risk thing for sure. But who knows what his reasoning was for leaving. Maybe he just wants to play more minutes and get his game back on track and the Devils understood and didn't mind because they'd keep his rights. If not, I imagine there's probably more value for the Devils in holding his rights and hoping he comes back, at some point, as an improved player. I probably wouldn't dump him for nothing if I were in Shero's shoes.

Yeah, but Werenski is actually really good

I wonder if they didn't offer more if he signed a long-term deal but he just wants to get to UFA so he can gtfo of there

BJs have over 10 million in space with all their guys signed

they dont have picks to sign a guy to offer sheet, but they should try making a deal for one of the big unsigned RFA's, if I was a fan of BJ's, like my brother is, I would be clamoring for them to do that

Problem is that their prospect pool kinda stinks, that'd be a real tough move for them to make. Atkinson would've been one hell of a trade chip if they didn't give him a full NTC. Without picks I think it would be real hard for them to pull something like that off. I really think they shot themselves in the foot "going for it" last season.

absolute desperation to finally win a playoff series

but I think the best comparison I can think of JD leaving there is when Bill Murray blew up the golf course at the end of Caddyshack then slowly walks away

Alex Ovechkin just fell awkwardly during scrimmage. Heard him yell. Had to be helped off ice and to locker room. No weight on left leg.

Desperation is a stinky cologne and they're going to feel the pain from that one for awhile.

It really is. A guy who is a 50 goal scoring, power forward, showing no signs of decline. He really is a unicorn.

I actually think they can bounce back quick. They don't really have the contracts to handicap them for long, and they might be bad enough to get high picks. Probably a bit better shape than us when we started.

I'd rather be the CBJ than say the Wings or Kings that sort of slowly faded back and never got bad enough to get a bunch of high picks with bad contracts. I'm not sure where the light at the end of the tunnel is for either one of those teams.

I mean they certainly have the cap space to do it, but they lack the assets to acquire anyone via trade and they're probably pretty low on the list of UFA destinations.

If I were them, I'd be looking to take a bad contract or two off the hands of a cap strapped team in return for some talent coming along with it.
