Didn't want to be a UFA so soon again. Said it himself in an interview that he wanted the longer term deal and turned down a lot of one or two year offers. - BINGO!
well he screwed himself out of more money doing that.
it would seem he left 10-12 million on the table for that stability. - BluesFan44isa_JOKE
I've always thought Gardiner seemed kinda slow. Him leaving money on the table just so he didn't need a new contract for an extra couple of years does seem to back that theory up.
As a Leaf fan I agree with you. We have been fortunate to have the high end young talent and have found a few good gems in the draft, but our asset management has become horrid. How many years in a row now have we traded our first rounder? And we keep letting guys walk as UFA without getting anything in return because we think ‘this is the year’?? Eventually this will catch up with us...
On the Gardiner signing, what everyone is forgetting to mention is his back injury. Jake was a shell of himself in the playoffs and I would assume teams are scared of that and that is why the number was so low... if he throws out his back again that contract becomes a problem... I assume the canes don’t have lots of extra cash to just burry him (re: Horton, Clarkson)
What happened? The Toronto's media and many fans said Gardiner would sign for $7 mil plus on a 6 year deal? - islansjet
Considering he is not 100% healthy and has just started working out because of chronic back problems, 4 million per year is a good haul. A healthy Gardner would probably got 5-6 million range.
