The Leafs probably aren't looking for picks. They are in win-now mode. - SolidGoldBricks
Yes, but they are going to be in even more cap hell next year as only 1 d-man is signed and perhaps being able to push through with the team they have and create space for a deadline trade without subtracting from the roster at the deadline then is something to consider. If you could pick up Timmons now to slot into next year that could be a good long-term play. It all comes down to whether or not Nylander and the other younger middle 6 players can replace the offense lost with Marner. For instance if NJ tanks after all their moves Hall might become available and will fit nicely at the deadline.
Always a lot of what-ifs, but figure they are really looking at the replacement person getting half the Marner points and then the other half coming from other players increasing production from last year. Certainly do-able to try and get a deadline pick-up and create a better cap situation for next year.
All for fun and make believe and I don't think the Leafs would hurt nearly as much in losing Marner as other teams might because of the depth on offense right now. |

I think Werenski for Marner is kinda fair.
Risto + Reinhart seems like an okay deal for both sides too. Reinhart probably gets 70-75 points in toronto, and Marner probably comes down to around 80-85 with the sabres. The points could be close on just the forward part of the deal.
Laine for Marner I would consider fair too. Very different players, but both star wingers. Laine with JT probably is back in the mid forties for goals.
of all the trades suggested those three seem legitimate. |

I'd like to suggest a sign and trade.
Montreal signs a lesser RFA like Connor to an offer sheet, since they aren't afraid of offer sheets and Bergy is looking to make a big splash. Then they trade Connor for Marner. They would have to add something though. Maybe like a 2nd round pick? Leafs could use a better back-up so maybe Montreal includes Keith Kinkaid who would be a perfect back-up for Toronto.
Montreal lands Marner to make a big splash. Leafs get Connor and save some cap space. Maybe enough to bring back Gardiner. - uofcguy
The Leafs are not screwing around. David Poile tweeted from his hiding spot in the auditorium (behind the munchie machine, don't tell anyone) that this is NOT OK. |

Would get an almost-digit-amount of comments, that don't go off topic and start talking about Marner.
But always keep in mind that Toronto is NOT the center of the hockey universe.

Curious, do people even read what other team's cap situation is? Because Leafs are hardly in "Cap Hell". They can move virtually anyone without issue in a trade. They have no overpaid bottom 6 guys on their roster unlike everyone else.
They have DSandin and Lilljegren signed next year FYI, and will have 16-18 million in cap AFTER they sign Marner.
This doom and gloom about the Leafs cap never works out. Remember how Marner was signing an offersheet July 1st and Nylander traded by the draft for cap reasons? |
