Marner is a very good player, but I don't recall him being league MVP. So I believe Hall is the better player regardless of age.
Marner & Kapanen for Hall, Vatanan and one of either a 2nd, Miles Wood or Jesper Boqvist? - Crushers68
it would be below chia level of gm'ing to trade a 21-year/90-point rfa for a pending ufa.

CLB Trades:
Seth Jones (RHD, top pair, 24yo, 6.4, 210lbs., 46p,) at 5.3M for 3 years until UFA
And
Josh Anderson (RW, 25yo, 6.3, 221lbs., 27g, 47p) at 1.8M for 1 year till RFA
Leafs Trade:
Mitch Marner and Timothy Liljigren or Sandin (add a pick if need be)
I think it’s fair to assume that CLB misses the playoffs this year and needs to rebuild a bit. This trade makes them younger and gives them the ability to negotiate a long term deal with Marner and eventually Liljigren. CLB will in turn have all the negotiating power as they have lost of cap space and will have more cost certainty going forward as Jones and Anderson’s deals expire in 3 years and 1 year. Lily is a RHD in replacement of Jones. Marner is a RW in replacement of Anderson. The points produced by Marner will make up for the points lost in the trade. Plus CLB will have a young gun offensive top line player locked up. Something they have had a tough time attracting and keeping.
For Toronto, they get a top pair RHD for the next three season to play with Rielly and compete for Cups. Which they would likely win if this deal went down. Anderson is a versatile forward who can play up and down the line-up. I personally see him in the same light as Tom Wilson in Washington. He scored 27 goals last season. Playing with the likes of Matthews or Tavares, I could imagine that number climbing above 30. Both players have size, grit and skill. They would fit in perfectly! Added to the great player fit, they are also a great team fit as their caps would equate to 7.1M this season (likely 10’ish mil when Anderson resigns) which gives the Leafs more room to add depth around their cup run squad. |

He won the hart with 93 points at age 27. Marner had 94 at age 21. He may not have won an MVP yet but he could. And he is still 5 years younger. The leafs are getting 2 UFAs back where NJ gets a player under control for 4 more years. If TO had to add anything it's a defensive prospect. Possibly Liljegren. |

I'd like to suggest a sign and trade.
Montreal signs a lesser RFA like Connor to an offer sheet, since they aren't afraid of offer sheets and Bergy is looking to make a big splash. Then they trade Connor for Marner. They would have to add something though. Maybe like a 2nd round pick? Leafs could use a better back-up so maybe Montreal includes Keith Kinkaid who would be a perfect back-up for Toronto.
Montreal lands Marner to make a big splash. Leafs get Connor and save some cap space. Maybe enough to bring back Gardiner. |

Realistic, probably not.
Avs - 2nd in 2020 from Caps
Avs - 3rd in 2020 from Toronto
Avs - 1st in 2021
Then one of Burakovsky, Jost, Bowers, Kaut, or Timmons.
Only issue I see is cap space comes into play and we need to shed about $5.5M from the current roster to make Rantanen and Marner fit.
9 d currently on the roster and Cole will start on LTIR so that will cover about $2M.
There are 14 F on the roster so at least one there needs to be sent down and you are looking at Nieto or Calvert which clears at least $2M. Marner coming in probably knocks both down though so that is $4.8M and the numbers work if Burakovsky isn't traded. If they take Jost you still send those two down and bring up Kaut to make the numbers work.
Hey, if Ek can make stuff up, so can I. - Dyaciuk
The Leafs probably aren't looking for picks. They are in win-now mode.

so you want the cbj to take on a ''problem'' and they give a prime asset that is secured for 3 years to Toronto.....yeah no

I believe the rule is you can't trade a player for 1 year after they sign an offer sheet. |

This is definitely not what I would want, I would love to see a Marner extension in TO, I'm just playing EKs game. |

Yes, but he's holding out and you could go the whole season with him sitting on the sidelines. Plus there aren't many teams who can take on this big of a contract, so your trade pool is limited. |

Marner would be CLB’s best problem to have! And hardly a problem based on it being a league wide issue. It’s only an issue in Toronto because the Leafs are cap strapped, unlike CLB who could offer him the Matthews deal no sweat. and he’d instantly be your best player. If cap had nothing to do with things, I wouldn’t make this deal as a Leaf. Only because cap plays a part. But CLB would be getting the best player in the deal by a mile! |

Well if that is the case and if what we are hearing is true about what Marner wants, Hall will be holding out also, because he isnt getting 13 mil a season. |
