The kicker here is you need a team with the cap space for what Marner allegedly wants, who doesn't have big time RFAs to sign. I was thinking something with Konecny before I remembered Provorov needs a contract. A proper hockey trade might be Marner for Rantanen, only because *rumours* are Rantanen is allegedly asking for less than Marner, and he doesn't have a loser father jerking the reins.... but then you get into the issue where Rantanen is allegedly waiting to see what Marner signs for.
Simple fact is that if Marner wants Matthews money, looking at Capfriendly, there probably aren't any takers. The people with space are set to tank/poop the bed next season and don't want to add a talent that might end up netting them 10 extra points and a worse lottery shot. People suggesting Carolina are myopic - no way Dundon pays Marner 10+. The only real option is a younger player still on their ELC, and reset and hope for a more rational ask when ELC is up. MAYBE NJD would bite to try and keep Hall - so let's go Palmieri, Jesper Boqvist, and a 2nd next year. I think that's too much, Leafs fans would go ape saying 'not enough' - but you've got an ego fueled RFA who wants more than he's worth at his age, and I think that drops his value as a trade chip a bundle. |

To ANA: Marner
To TOR: Ondrej Kase, Ritchie, and a 2020 or 2021 2nd.
At most, the Leafs take on 4m in cap space and get two bodies, which allows them to save 5m+ (assuming Marner signs for over 9m). They replace about 25-30 goals in Kase (if he stays healthy) and they get a LW with some grit.
ANA gets a young superstar winger to take some of the load off Rakell. |

I'm playing the roll of Jason Botterill calling from Buffalo.
For Mitch Marner, I would offer...
1) Samson Reinhart
2) Rasmus Ristolainen
3) One prospect- Mittelstadt, Olofsson, Borgen
4) 2 first round picks. 2020 and 2021
To get a player like Marner it will take sacrifice.. and is going to hurt. Losing this collecion of assets would definitely hurt.. (However we would still keep Eichel and Dahlin)
What say you? Marner in a Sabres jersey? |

This is a cuckoo bananas insane overpay from the Sabres IMO. Take out both #3 and #4, and you're much closer. |

Trade a collection of young assets under team control for one player that you will then have to negotiate with to sign long-term. Solid idea. |

The Leafs have ridiculous depth, Edmonton has none. Marner and William Nylander have both overstayed their welcome (there is no "I" in Team). The Oil are a mess and need a talent upgrade. I think everyone sees where I am going with this. Before I get lynched, let's remember 2 things - 1. McDavid will be asking for a trade in short order if/when inevitably Holland cannot fix the mess Chia left behind, and 2. Wayne Gretzky was traded in his prime. Toronto can provide a package that far exceeds the Gretzky haul, and, gives the Oil the multiple pieces they need to fix their mess. The trade is: Marner, Nylander, Adam Brooks, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (2-C's to refill McD's spot) and Tim Liljegren (to fill Russell's spot), for McDavid and Kris Russell. Toronto can shelter Russell, Tavares would likely be the one that needs to move to the wing, but would get to play with either McD or AM. That is a lot to give up, but TO gets the by far best player in the trade and Connor would thrive in TO.

Marner is a very good player, but I don't recall him being league MVP. So I believe Hall is the better player regardless of age.

Realistic, probably not.
Avs - 2nd in 2020 from Caps
Avs - 3rd in 2020 from Toronto
Avs - 1st in 2021
Then one of Burakovsky, Jost, Bowers, Kaut, or Timmons.
Only issue I see is cap space comes into play and we need to shed about $5.5M from the current roster to make Rantanen and Marner fit.
9 d currently on the roster and Cole will start on LTIR so that will cover about $2M.
There are 14 F on the roster so at least one there needs to be sent down and you are looking at Nieto or Calvert which clears at least $2M. Marner coming in probably knocks both down though so that is $4.8M and the numbers work if Burakovsky isn't traded. If they take Jost you still send those two down and bring up Kaut to make the numbers work.
Hey, if Ek can make stuff up, so can I.

I like both players but Draisaitl is 50 goal scorer. Those are too rare to trade away. |
