Wait for an offer sheet and collect your 4 1st round picks. Otherwise let the Mitch sit out a season. Someone has to put these entitled kids in their place. If he thinks he can make (salary and endorsements) and be more in another city than he can as a super star in the center of the hockey world, then let him try. I would have no problem letting him sit. I would also make sure everyone knows what he was offered, lets see how leaf fans feel about you then Mitch! - JDub76
The new CBA is going to come out and address this issue. Don't be surprised to see a cap on RFA players indexed to any cap increases year over year.
There will probably be a fix for players already under contract who are above the RFA cap... or a compliance buyout.
I think that everyone is sick of holdouts. It kills the game. You end up with an out of shape player mid-season, like Nylander last year. |

I would make the call to Columbus regarding Seth Jones for sure! Maybe the Leafs sweeten with a defenceman... |

We will see. I think everyone has been saying the shorter the term the lower the dollar. People were talking 7 yrs and $10.5M AAV early on. Seems $9.5M and 3 yrs would make some sense and with camp starting soon we are up against the deadlines both sides imposed to get something done.
If a signing doesn't get done this week then this could be Nylander all over again.
And we now have Keller setting some what of a bar with his AAV of $7.1M. Keller being nowhere near the same level as Marner probably would have been about $5.5M - $6M on a 3 year deal so again, some parameters for what a Marner deal could look like.
Bottom line, with Keller pulling in $7.1M there is no way Marner is settling for less than $9.5M and I don't see the leafs going much higher unless it is a long term deal and they are probably not touching $11M even in that case. - Dyaciuk
fair enough.
should set the bar for ratanenen at $10m/year for 3 years since ratanenen had a higher ppg average than marner the last 2 years.
though this is very much looking like another o'rielly situation all over again. Maybe it ends with another treasure trove of assets from buffalo? |

Leafs=Centre of the hockey universe. This proves it. - RogerRoeper
No.
This just proves you have an incompetent GM
-Matthews deal at ONLY 5 years
-Buckled to Kneelander's demands
-No long term plan on D
-Zero help for Red Light Freddy
and now soiling the relationship with Marner
As a division rival it's quite enthusing to watch

It can't be Nylander all over again, Leafs do not have the cap space for any kind of hold out. |

I mean, I know people love to discredit him but I see him saying things that actually happen more than others and he says them before others, too.
Doesn't change the fact that he's kind of a Richard, though. |

Hahaha Paul Marner's hand-puppet. Dreger's colon is shaped like Paul's hand at this point. - Aetherial
Unfortunately, people in the business who actually have integrity are also reporting it.
Would be an incredibly bad deal for the Leafs. |

Honestly it's possible you see a Mark Stone situation here - 1 year deal, traded at the deadline, albeit not because of a cheap owner, but because of too many cap heavy forward contracts. Next year there's no money for the defense and not enough talent coming in the pipeline to fill the gaps. Leafs can hedge on run and gun offense and stellar goaltending, but such a system is liable to fall apart at the most inopportune of times. |

yes trading great assets at deadline is great for teams about to actually participate in the playoffs... |

There’s a lot of craziness in both sides of this conversation. First line winger vs number one defenseman. Jones is worth more. |

I'm playing the roll of Jason Botterill calling from Buffalo.
For Mitch Marner, I would offer...
1) Samson Reinhart
2) Rasmus Ristolainen
3) One prospect- Mittelstadt, Olofsson, Borgen
4) 2 first round picks. 2020 and 2021
To get a player like Marner it will take sacrifice.. and is going to hurt. Losing this collecion of assets would definitely hurt.. (However we would still keep Eichel and Dahlin)
What say you? Marner in a Sabres jersey? - Rando716
