Because the majority of the game is played at 5-on-5. If I recall correctly, it averages out to ~12 mins/game on special teams and the remaining 48 minutes at even strength. You're better off quantifying the elements of the game state in which 80% of the game is played first and then looking further into the remaining 20%.

With the league being so equal, you'd think it would be better to work on something that leads to goals a lot quicker. 5v5 is mostly luck and bounces due to most teams being fairly equal, where as the PP it's more about skill and setting up the skilled players.

TB scored 206 goals 5v5 in 3907 mins but scored 74 goals in only 408 PP mins.

Moral of the story is....draw more penalties 5v5 by diving.

No one is saying to not pay attention to the PP stats; just that they're less significant than 5 on 5 production.

Also, I take issue with your description of 5 on 5 scoring being mostly luck. Players that consistently score at 5 on 5 disprove that rather easily. In fact, I'd argue that PP scoring is more influenced by luck that EV strength.

Ignoring the fact that penalty differential is already a commonly used and tracked stat, one can't simply expect a team full of players that draw more penalties because of the nature of NHL reffing. It's a culture of even-up calls and keeping the penalty differential relatively close so any attempts to game the system would likely end up with your team getting a reputation as divers and embellishers- which would have the inverse effect.

Meh, looking at 5v5 shot attempts and then labeling a player good or bad seems a bit simple and used by simpletons, that’s all I was getting at

True. This is why alex Ovechkin is considered the greatest goal scorer of all-time by many, including bloggers on this very site.

But still, his goals are mostly by luck, cause jay beagle's shot is just as good.

Jason Chimera would be Jack Eichel if he got the same ice time too.

The only reason why Ovechkin scores more goals is because he is able to get more shots off on the ice. However that has nothing to do with skill. Beagle has just as good of a shot.

It is an act with Tanner, and in his defence, it's sorta working.

He gets people to react to his deliberately-antagonistic writings.

And hey, it's pretty successful if you want to continue to get paid in loonies and twonies here at Hockeybuzz.

It's probably not a good strategy if you want to write for a legitimate media outlet, but let's be honest here: Tanner doesn't have the hockey knowledge to actually make that dream a reality.

So here we are.

Truth. But what grinds my gears is that those people are the most annoying and useless people around. Whats the point. Seriously. As benign as the interactions are it does say alot about the type of person he is. He does have some great write ups, but for the most part; me being one who doesn't condone violence, its his character type that you wish gets punched in the face when you see them in a movie/real life.

ALso his trolling does liken this site to be more TMZ and takes away from the credibility of decent writers here. Selfish and trashy for the most part.

Eichel sucks. Should of used a better player for this analogy.

For the future, about 24 months out, the answer will be:
Rasmus Dahlin / Henri Jokiharju

No doubt.

Oh, and Austin Matthew's is an American saving the wussy Toronto franchise.
Suck it Toronto "fans"
