Doesn't matter because in 20/21 it will be Luukkonen's team!!

He's going to be the future

Coming from a Marty fan?
- adambuffalo

Guess I like him. Wouldn't call him a favorite or anything, but I certainly don't dislike him.

Carter had 1 great season as a backup. Marty had a lot of very good seasons as a backup and much better success as a starter.

Hutton is an average to slightly above average Back up
- hehateme

yet he was one of the best backups in the last decade with the blues

translation, fix the d and 90% of the goalie issues are resolved

The changes on defense are not the biggest thing that will help our goalies improve. They will have some impact, however the biggest change that will help would be our forwards learning how to play in our own zone. This is where the additions of Johansson and Vesey hopefully will encourage the team to play as a unit as opposed to what we saw last season. Many times the forwards would be turned up ice, skating away from the play before ensuring the D had control of the puck.

I expect a greater integration of Hutton's A+ puck handling and the defense

there was a couple games when we had the 2 goal lead and the other team pulled there goalie.. you could just see him cheating to try and get those dumps to get a shot on net.. almost got it one time.

I guess that's your opinion. If you're basing Hutton's career on last year then sure, but Marty had a lot of subpar seasons. I am a Marty fan, but calling him that much better is shortsighted.

he had flashes of really good play within the average goalie play. Buffalo had much better D and for a while could actually score 4 to 5 goals per game so if he let in 2 or 3 it wasn't a big deal

The fact that they did nothing in goal is more proof I think that this is a stealth rebuild year. I'm fairly certain the plan is to see UPL for the last 10-15 games and see if he can be a #1 next year. These two are just filling up the roster until then.

Almost no one mentions goal, but if the two goalies just had an average gaa of 2.80 (not great), we give up 20 less goals or so last year. That's halfway to being good.

- matty12345

Aw man, are the Sabres tanking AGAIN!? Botts sticking to what he knows I guess.

What could they have possibly done in goal? Signed Bobrovsky? And because they didn't do anything its all of a sudden a stealth tank year? WTF lol.

A better D corpse and team structure should help them a great deal.

I'm not bashing his career, there's just not a lot to base it on. 1 below average season as a starter, 1 exceptional season as a backup, and 4 seasons that average out to slightly below average.

He has a lot to prove this year. For now, I just view him as a stopgap. The job is there for UPL to steal by the end of the year.

League average sv% was .910 last year. Hutton was .908

.2% below league average is statistically irrelevant

I agree he's not a longterm solution, but he will not be the reason if the sabres dont do well imo

100% agree with this.... fix the d and goaltending greatly improves. I believe that big time.

Hutton and Ullmark will never elite but they can improve big time with a better team.

He was slightly below average across the board. Appealing your ruling to the arbiter.

So they didn't ship out their RFA and UFA-in-2-years because they want to rebuild.

mk. That whole first paragraph is a bucket of Nope.

Were still rebuilding thru the draft this season

Goaltending was not the prob, Defense/Team defense and lack of secondary scoring killed this team last year.

He was hung out to dry for much of his career. During the Ferrari years it didn't matter much as he channeled Grant Fuhr and they kept winning. During his Vezina season he he was shut-down as he was able to close off what little was left by a strong defensive team. The other years he was hung out to dry by a porous defense without the goal support of the ECF years.

Doesn't have to be Bobrovsky to shore up a really bad tandem. Varlamov would have been amazing, they could have got him instead of MoJo. Trades exist. The sabres weren't even linked to any goalie all off-season which means they didn't want to add a goalie. Why? Because Hutton is the long term backup and they see him and Ullmark as an acceptable stopgap UNTIL 2020 when they are actually going to try to win.

Whatever. You people live in fairyland. Swap Vesey for pominville and add a #4 defenseman and a third liner and we are going to go from 7th worst to competing. Okay.

A team that was determined to make the playoffs would have addressed a duo with a gaa of over 3. Even if the defense is to blame, we have all the same defensemen as last year except Miller who isn't great in his own zone. That's all I'm saying. Anyone who disagrees is just hoping and praying to get better through magic.

I wouldn't neccesarily say it was a porous defense. They played different than if the backup was in. Took more chances. Miller would face 5-10 more shots per game than Marty would. The team had a different mentality playing with Miller, knowing that he was back there.
Same with the Hasek years.
Goal support has been a problem for a long time.

Someone has an opinion that no one agrees with. I know you're commander of the stealth tank conspiracy boss, but there is literally zero evidence that Botterill is trying to lose.

Every team, every single year, is trying to build through the draft. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a draft.
