If we don’t trade Risto,
should we keep him on the topPP over Dahlin?
1) keep his trade value up
2) hold Dahlin’s points back a little so his next deal will be a bit less

As long as Risto continues to be productive on the PP, i don’t think that would hurt us in terms of wins/losses

Probably won’t happen, just a thought though

that's on Housley and how he ran his practices
- Michael Pachla

Kruger doesn't exactly sound like a kind of guy that encourages his players to MF each other either.

If Buscaglia is right, you owe Homie a pack of Sierras.

I understand the reasoning, but I think it's time to try winning for a change. Instead of game planning for next offseason, the decision should be solely based on what will get us more wins. If Dahlin would get 10 pts more over the course of the year, you play him IMO. Whether there's a quantifiable difference, on PP, that is another question. The PP is where Risto is fairly solid.

The way to accomplish both of those goals naturally is get risto's o zone starts up and play him against lesser competition, and give swedish jesus harder minutes. It would help the team at the same time.

We also dont know what the PP structure will be. It could be an umbrella with Risto up top and Eichel and Dahlin playing their off wings

Or Risto gets traded

i can't see a guy (freddy) who just got back into the NHL making any roster decisions based upon contracts over what is best for the team..

Totally agree
That’s why I qualified the idea with Risto still doing good on the PP
If he’s not, obviously u don’t keep him there
Or if Dahlin is significantly better,
then u can’t hold him back either

He had the 37th most O zone starts of any D, missing 4 games.

He’d have been top 25 if he played those 4 games

Fair point
But i feel like coaches & GMs don’t actually work as cohesively as they should
And too often u see different agendas at play

For example:
A GM is trying to do what’s best for the long haul,
where a coach is just trying to keep his job
A more strategy where everyone is on the same page from top to bottom just seems like a better idea to me

If that means playing a certain player a certain way, then that’s what you do
You don’t acquire a power hitter & ask him to bunt, etc etc etc

Percentage, not total.

Reduce his minutes, keep him fresh, play him in the o zone

Get him up to 60% while playing 18-20 a game. I guarantee he'll look better

Your answer lies below.

https://wgr550.radio.com/...eger-still-listening-fans

Krueger has a big mandate for anybody on his staff. He said, “All of them are going to challenge me, come in here and challenge what I’m saying, challenge what I’m thinking, so when we leave our coaches room, we come out with one voice, but in that space I’d like to have a positive conflict, I love to put expectations on the table right away and then arguing with the people around me in a good way and I’m open to hearing what everybody thinks and then I have to process it and then my job as a head coach is to make decisions and they’re not always going to be popular and not everybody is going to like them, but in the end the only way that I go forward is my decisions will always be driven with what I believe with all the information and experience I have, what is best for the team.

For sure. Drop his minutes, up his percentage in the ozone, decrease his competition. Maybe someday a coach will be able to teach him something.

He was 9th in the league in TOI. Of the players with more TOI only Provorov had a lower Ozone start %. Brent Burns, who averaged about 30 seconds more TOI started 63.4% of the time in the Ozone (even higher than Eichel). 611 players that played in an NHL game last year had a higher Ozone start % than Risto. Cherry picking stats does not change the original point that Risto should have a higher Ozone start rate.

Agreed. You don't optimize Risto's usage and production at the expense of Dahlin's. You win games by doing the exact opposite.

To be fair, Perry is hurt and missed the last preseason game. The Bills may have picked Yeldon over him even if healthy, but we know for sure who they're picking if the options are (1) Yeldon and (2) an injured guy. This is all moot if Perry is healthy enough to practice and play this week, though.

This discussion was a hot topic maybe a month ago if I recall. I agree that Risto would benefit from fewer minutes and a high % of O-zone starts, but there in lies the problem. He's not going to play the top PP too often. I would have to imagine 90% of the time it will be Dahlin, Eichel and 3 other forwards. The sabres just went out and acquired a less established but more offensively gifted D in Mountour. Dahlin is still 19, will have some tough nights and should get plenty of O zone starts. Unless Dahlin and Risto play together there is no way to make it all work.

how did Housley run his practices? I'd honestly love to hear detail.
- TheSabresTaco

Apparently rather loosely, to the point where a player wanted the team to mf each other

No offense, but how do you think he is more offensively gifted when in the 3 seasons he's played he has not even hit 40 points and Risto did it in his 2nd full season and hit over 40 for 4 consecutive seasons?

Risto averages 20% more ice time.
I would guess even more avg pp time as well.
