With three weeks remaining in the Buffalo Sabres' season, Casey Mittelstadt called his trainer, Erik Rasmussen, in March to make plans to start their offseason workouts.

The date Mittelstadt wanted to begin: April 12, only three days after the Sabres' season finale in Detroit.

"I said, ‘There’s no way you’re starting then,'" Rasmussen, Director of Player Development at MAP South Hockey in Mendota Heights, Minn., recalled during a recent phone interview. "Casey said, ‘I will be there and we’re starting.’ ... Casey is driving it. It’s no one else telling him to work like this."

I need mayonnaise and milk, and gas for the car, but I'm not feeling like getting off the couch.

Even saying he's unreasonable is not very accurate. It's precisely what this team is looking for. A young multi positional top 6. I don't know if a one for one is even, but if you have a bunch of pieces in there, it would seem like it has the potential to really even out for both teams.

That's what I thought as well. Detroit has to value him, but I think Risto would actually do well there. If we had to add an Asplund or Davidsson to get the job done, I'd entertain that idea.

We will see. I can't imagine us having all these defenseman by the end of October when Pilut and Bogo come off IR.

If he can reach his potential as a 2C, this team will be in so much better shape. At times he looked sluggish last year, maybe partially because he'd never played so many games in a year, but was worried it might be motivation. This says otherwise and I actually excites me.

I really think he's the single most important factor of this season.

If he is good, I think we are going to be good

It's hard for me not to say that Dahlin's development isn't the most important part, but you have an argument there. Mitts being a legit 2C changes quite a bit. We have a few solid defenders now, so impact wise, you may be exactly right.

Risto isn't great, no arguments there and Hronek I know is a good one, but I don't think you'd say he's better at this moment.I saw an article talking about him as the next Lidstrom, so perhaps I'm wrong.

amateur. For your punishment, it's gonna cost you an aging Hasek, a prime Zetterburg and Mantha for Ristolainen's broken stick collection.

I mean, it wasn't. It's not Jack Eichel showing up to training camp 30 lbs over weight. It's a rookie that had to figure out that he needed to step up his game.
