For all the people laughing or cricizing those contracts.
The question should be, "Would your team trade valuable pieces for those guys". The answer is yes, in both cases. So the contracts are not horrible.
We are going to hate when Matthews walks though. - Aetherial
What happens if the Leafs offer Matthews the biggest contract in history a year before he's UFA? Doubt he doesn't sign,
Forget about that Arizona fantasy. They have to start winning and stop losing money |

Saying that Matthews' contract is fine is being very naive at best.
(and I personally think that Matthews will challenge McDavid for best player in NHL).
Matthews' contract is the most player friendly in whole of NHL. - MaximusAurelius
Yeah but you won't have that opinion when many players pass his contract and he hits his prime years. |

I sincerely doubt the Coyotes will be in Arizona in 5 years.
New owner isn't stupid.
Phoenix may be the 12th largest TV market in the US, but Houston is #8.

It Matthews would have signed the exact same deal as Panarin, it would have been a great deal for Leafs.
The contract being 2 years shorter changes everything though.
it really is a bad contract from the Leafs perspective - not caphit wise, but the fact that he signed it for 5y only. |

yes.
but that doesn't change the fact that the contract is the most player friendly in the whole league, and it was negotiated poorly by Leafs. |

It's a big part of why the NHL wants a team there.
You put another team in Toronto, and you haven't created a single new hockey fan.
You let Phoenix relocate to Quebec City, and you haven't created a single new hockey fan.
But if you can build a fan base in a new market like Phoenix, that's more eyes on the product, and higher TV revenues.
But the new Coyotes owner is a smart businessman (as opposed to the previous 37 owners, who have all been waaaaay over their heads). He has a history of buying undervalued entities and turning them around.
It's become crystal clear that a new, free arena is not on the agenda of the State of Arizona, so he's going to have to look elsewhere.

From a Habs perspective as well, yes.
Not that I wouldn't take Eichel, I just think Marner is more dominant than he is. - Scabeh
It is a really tough call. Marner is more dynamic to this point in his career and probably has a bit better numbers(?).
Eichel is a big, young center with tremendous skill. I think only maturity has held him back. He could end up being dominant in a way that Marner likely never will.

So then it's not a really bad contract then. I've said I wouldn't love it if my team signed him to that deal, but it's not bad/terrible. It's just not ideal. What is really? |

People on Kijiji are such female genitalias. You undersell something already by like 30 bucks and the (frank)er tries to say they can't buy it unless it's shaved by another 10...just pay the 10 you douche it's already a great deal |

There's a strong argument to be made that he will be the 2nd best player in the league for the next five years. Why shouldn't he be paid top dollar?
Leafs fans bellyaching about the contract need to STFU.
It's like they don't remember when Matt Stajan was our top centre. |

a 1y deal at 1mln for a 23y old 56point player for example
or Meier's contract
or Roman Josi's contract
or Couturier's contract
or Barkov's contract
or Scheifele's contract
etc. etc. |

Unfortunately that same logic is what has kept Toronto from having an NFL team. There is no question whatsoever that the city could and would support it. The problem is not many new fans, and not much new TV revenue. |

Hello, Houston. - Atomic Wedgie I totally knew/understand the new fans aspect. I just genuinely had no idea there were that many people that lived there
I'd rather them move to Houston anyways. The fact that they're being plucked out of the Pacific when Seattle joins the league and being placed in the Central is a step to that too. I'm not saying the league is doing that because they know they're moving, just that it would make even more sense now. Arizona is in the same time zone as Colorado, right? I think both of their games usually start at mountain time. I know Arizona, or parts of it, don't follow daylight savings, which always throws me off |

it's not the top dollar amount.
it's the fact that it's just 5year .
I would have been happy with an 8 year deal at 13mln for Matthews. |
