Marner is the Leafs best player and should be paid as such. Don't buy the BS about how centers are worth more than play driving wingers. I hope he sticks to his guns and doesn't sign a team friendly contract that will screw him once again. Its sad how some Leaf fans have turned on Marner over a problem caused by signing Tavares and Matthews to big contracts.

And that is why I say I take him over Marner at 10.5 M

I think it’s time to send these rfa’s a message. Let him sit the season or trade his @&&. I am so tired of these young players demanding huge amounts of money and which basically then handcuffs the team from improving in other areas.
I love Marner but this whole thing puts a sour taste in my mouth. I would rather see someone who wants to be here and play for the leafs then someone who is about the money.
Also it’s time to get rid of the one who stArted it all, melander.

I like the creativity behind the deal too. It really is set up to help the team for a bit, but then suits his needs towards the end of it. It also sets him up well for another contract. I didn't even realize any of this until The Athletic put up an article about it. Usually as a fan it's just "What's the cap hit? That's all I care about!". In most cases that's true and perfectly fine, but it's interesting to me in this particular instance how a mix of arbitration rights and salary affect the deal down the road.

When asked if he believed Marner and Dubas were close to inking a deal, Friedman noted that what fascinates him “is that I’ve had people tell me they don’t think they’re really that far off on a short-term deal. I’ve had other people telling me the team is really starting to get fed up with the way this is going.”

Such a poopty situation.

I think even once he signs his deal he is not untouchable anymore.

Of course, but how much risk? I can't think of a 26 year old high end hockey player (lately) suffering a career ending/altering injury. The medical field has made enough advances to prevent that from happening in most instances.

Virtually every good RFA not named Aho is holding out right now. This isn't just Marner. People need to calm down, there's no way the NHL is going into next season without all of those guys. I have faith it'll get sorted out. But you can bet that the owners will try to put restrictions on RFA holdouts after this summer.

Yeah, but he really wanted to be a Hab. Only reason he isn't holding out still.

He'll probably be one after this deal

I like him too much to have him go there. Same with Cole Caufield

Well you are right.
concussions can always happen though.
Maybe an 8 year deal at 5mln is more interesting than a 4y deal at 6million.. I guess it depends on how risk averse you are.

Marner is probably the Leafs 3rd best forward.

Dont buy the BS about how a flashy winger who played 82 games with an Elite Center is worth more than Auston Matthews

I'm sure a deal will get done and all, but I honestly don't think they want to deal with Ferris ever again. And I can't say I blame them at all. Negotiating entirely through the media doesn't build any faith or trust. Nor does asking for the biggest over payment in league history.

So I really hope that come Marner's next contract, Ferris isn't his agent anymore.

Of course, in a perfect world, Marner fires the idiot today and is signed within the week.

I don't think he would've went anywhere near a 8 year deal for only 5M and personally, I don't find that deal more interesting. I've already stated why I like it, so I won't repeat myself.

On another note, though, which 22-26 year old's career has been ended by concussions? I really can't put my finger on one in the modern NHL. Bergy and Crosby both had them early on and they were BRUTAL. They both turned out fine in the long run and returned to greatness. No I am not saying Timo Meier is Crosby or Bergeron - I know how you fools on here operate (general statement, not you personally)

centers are more valuable than wingers. It's amazing that you think differently.
