Matt Murray was an absolute beast when he came back from injury last year.
- j.boyd919

I would agree. Much less leaky than usual and he stopped A TON of the odd man rushes and breakaways against him. It was actually kinda crazy

Don’t mind me, just thinking out loud.

If I can’t get Vasilevski this year I’ll definitely see if I can bargain shop for goalies. They go quick in my league but I can probably land Markstrom in the 5th round or so. I’m guessing Mrazek and Grubauer will be available later as well. I think Rask will be a top fantasy goalie this year. Regardless I’ll probably target Markstrom in the 5th round if I can wait that long

I agree, and that was in spite of the defense. I'm just saying that I wouldn't rely on that again when our defense is even worse.

Matt Murray was an absolute beast after the pens acquired Eric Gudbranson last year.

Well I could switch to Robert Hagg, but I'd actually want an asset for him.

Hey, the corpse of Phaneuf is out there, too.

- jmatchett383

Doesn't Hagg hit a lot? Is he actually a reliable stay at home player? Somehow I picked him in a fantasy league for the hits he brings Geez

For a fairly young player on your bottom pair, he's fine. Hits, has good positioning, can play PK. But ask him to move the puck and...well, like I said, bottom pair.

He really was. There were far too many games last season that Murray or DeSmith had to straight up steal for my liking, way too many. Much like the 2017 run, its not sustainable. If the team doesnt tighten up and commit to hard work D in all zones this season then the goalies are going to have to be doing that again more often than not.

Is there a way to see number of odd man rushes vs a team in a season? I'm curious to see where the Pens would rank last season. I think they would be near the top (most).

Nah.

Murray started playing well in December, banging out 9 straight wins when returning from injury.

Gudbranson came in March.

Safe to say Guddy had nothing to do with Murray playing well, given that Murray was already playing at a high level before that plug got here.

Another loss for your eye test.

Both are kind of true. Murray was good when he returned from injury as you said. Used that time to make some adjustments that paid off.

But Gudbranson did have some of the best defensive metrics in the league when he got here and the Pens numbers as a while improved.

Not sure he doesn't revert to form, but Gudbranson was rock solid. But Murray's improvement was all him, with a stick tap to the goalie coach.

Sure Gudbranson played well compared to his below average bar, but Murray was playing well 3 months prior to Gudbranson arriving in Pittsburgh, which is why I don't buy into Murray playing better "because of Gudbranson."

Yah, he had been kicking ass for a few months prior to the trade.

Yep, don't disagree at all about Murray. Just wanted to talk Gudbranson a little because he didn't just survive, he made an impact.

Gudbranson's corsi, Fenwick, and shots for were all over 54%, xGF and SCF around 59%, and HDCF 65% all with only 42% Ozone starts. I don't expect a repeat, but I'm hopeful for a solid defensive defenseman at limiting chances against that just needs some help moving the puck up ice.

I’d be curious on what the numbers were away from Petts

Him and Pettersson were really good. I highly doubt he replicates those numbers with JJ on his left, but if he is to remain in a reduced role I think he will be more than ok. Yes he is overpaid for being a 3rd pair guy, but the results he put up last season in 20 games, and even in the playoffs when we looked like garbage, were something to be positive about.

SCF and HDCF were all positive, Fenwick and Shots for were negative. But he only played 48 minutes away from pettersson, splitting time with 6 different D.

Imagine JR deems Petts-Guds a capable 2nd pair and trades Schultz to free space because Schultz is the only D-man (besides Tang and Dumo) any other GM wants...

Probably not a huge loss in reality but I liked Billy G. Not sure how we will be as a GM but seemed like a great person for developing young players.

Curious now we have a lot of GMJR/former Canes connections in important roles with Karmanos and Velluci.

I wish we could have gotten Ronny Francis to be AGM and eventual successor to GMJR.
