1. How is there no signs of Patrick getting better this season? It’s not like he went from a 30 point rookie season to a 20 point rookie season. Like, what were you expecting? I think we all expect better but he didn’t get worse. He’s a kid.

Patrick regressed in almost every single scoring department this season. He only managed one more point total despite a bump in ATOI. His goals, primary assists, points, and shot rates are all down from a year ago. He's creating less off the rush than before. His fancy metrics (which were already meriocre) are down across the board, too.

He's not simply treading water. He got worse. That's where the concern is.

if the flyers are still floundering the next 2 years; say 1st rd playoff exits. Do you look to move couterier in the last year of his deal? Or do you sign him to a huge deal for big coin? while young in age he has a lot of mile son his body.

Im hard pressed to think of a realistic deal where I want to move Coots.

One thing to consider is not all players develop in a constant upward trend. Look at MacKinnon for example:

2013-14 GP: 82 24 39 63 pts
2014-15 GP: 64 14 24 38 pts
2015-16 GP: 72 21 31 52 pts
2016-17 GP: 82 16 37 53 pts
2017-18 GP: 74 39 58 97 pts
2018-19 GP: 82 41 58 99 pts

Obviously there's contrast between NP/Mack for total production, but my point is that even someone who is now touted as a top 3 player in the league had a bit of an unclear trajectory at first.

I say we have faith, and continue to root for NP to turn his "flashes" into "the usual."

There's a difference between failing to repeat an incredible Calder Trophy debut, and somehow regressing after a 30-point rookie campaign, tho.

I don't expect development to be linear. He could score fewer points, but if he showed that he was improving in some respect, I'd feel a lot better about him. MacKinnon was still putting up elite possession and shot-generating metrics during his 'slump' year. Coots had demonstrated play-driving and line-driving ability to go along with elite defense. Same with Ryan O'Reilly. There was tangible proof that those guys were better players than their point totals suggested.

Patrick doesn't have any of that going for him.

Clearly, this trend will continue and he will get worse every year.

Dump him now for a 5th while we can still get anything for him.

Patrick is already better then what Coots was after two seasons.

I have to disagree with this.

Yeah, people seem to hang on flashes forever.

Consistency is the name of the game.

- Tomahawk

Im not hanging on flashes. What Im saying is that from the flashes he has shown, I believe he is more than capable of becoming a pretty good player in this league, and by seeing flashes of it, it makes me more confident that he can one day put it all together. After 2 seasons I feel like this should be his breakout season and you're right, he needs to make it a consistent thing year in and year out. that can also be said about several of our young guys who have been with the big club for numerous seasons (TK, Lindblom, Sanheim, even Provy and Ghost need to be more consistent year in and year out).
