In my opinion (and unlike a lot of people I don't pretend to have inside information), Botts was too greedy with Risto. There was absolutely a lot of buzz about a trade...but that was before all the money was gone. Botts could have dumped him for some picks or a good forward prospect, but he held out for a top end roster player, and Risto just doesn't have top 6 forward value in a trade. Now he has a player whining to anyone who will listen about how much he hates losing here, and you can't trade 5.5 million dollars of salary in August. Everyone is already up against the cap or in a holding pattern.

But you know, the fact that this blog proposes a Laine for Risto trade shows how overvalued this guy is in Buffalo. Any other NHL city, that idea would be laughed out of town. If Botts was looking for anything close to that, no wonder he is still here.

No, no.
I was told that the big player hockey trades occur after FA, usually in Aug or Sept.

BTW you are spot on. Teams build their teams in June and early July. Then tweak it if needed afterwords.
Several teams who were rumored to be in on Risto made other moves to fill their hole. They are virtually down to The Peg and maybe another team.
Hole on until late Feb now at the earliest, more likely next June.

The guy who has scored 33+ goals in a row 6 straight years and averages 69 points a season is better then the player who has cracked 60 points twice in his career twice and has 4 30+ goal seasons in 9 years. Mind blowing stuff I know.

Our roster is still butt. A LOT of guys have to have career years for us to get moving. Also we have 38 defensemen and 1 center. Should’ve done something Botts.

So we are trading Risto for futures ? Also way to go from one extreme to the other btw. I never said to have a team with max cap room, you have to spend to the ceiling to remain competitive. Im concerned with how the dollars are spent. We need to be strong down the middle, on the blue line, and in goal.

It is a coincidence that the Blackhawks haven’t done anything relevant since giving Kane $10.5M ? Kane is the best winger in the NHL yet having the best season of his career didn’t get the Hawks to the playoffs. Heck even Debrincant scored 40. If you don’t have a strong d-corps and depth down the middle it won’t matter. Goalies are more important then wingers.

- Swedish_Jesus

Pat Kane was at worst the 2nd most important player on the Hawks Cup Teams
You are way, way too focused on position
They win absolutely ZERO CUPS without him
And Hossa, another winger, was more important than any Center they had not named Toews
Same with winger Patrik Sharp

Actually, goalie happened to be relatively unimportant for that team
They won with a decent Niemi, who proved to be a low end starter at best
And then a very young Crawford, who may have turned into a top5 goalie, but wasn’t at the time

There are plenty of ways to build a championship team
And we can afford to spend $$$ on Skinner bc we have so much (relatively) cheap young talent coming at Center

Mitts- bridge deal won’t be much, and long term would be a bargain

Cozens- 3 cheap years, and if he’s our 3C then he won’t put up big enough stats to get a huge raise right away either

Asplund- will never cost much bc of the role he’ll be in behind top talent, even though i think he’ll be very good himself
*same with Davidsson, Pekar & Routsalainen potentially

The specific design you have stuck in your head is NOT the only way

You’ve been like this since late June,
and I’m afraid for you if u don’t take a step back from the ledge

It’s August dude, u still got about 6weeks to go

Kane and Hossa are two of the best wingers to play the game in the last 30 years. Skinner is not even a top 20 winger in the NHL today. If we didn’t trade for Skinner this past year and he didn’t play with Eichel he probably wouldn’t even be a top 35 winger in the NHL.

U kinda missed the main point about the Sabres:

There are plenty of ways to build a championship team
And we can afford to spend $$$ on Skinner bc we have so much (relatively) cheap young talent coming at Center
