pretty sure it was RW
- homiedclown

It was center

"He was a guy that could get a lot of points," Simonick said. "He played defense most of the time, but there was a couple records - you know Scotty knows all about the records. He let Phil play center for maybe 20 games and he ended up getting more goals than any other rookie defenseman and more points."

Yeah there are pieces, but it still screams "island of misfit toys" to me. Too many players in some positions, not enough in others, and no depth at some positions.

Botterill has assembled great quantities of LWs and RDs, but that's not a team. My boy Erod is still the the 2b center on this team, which - I am the leader of the fan club - but that is no bueno. We still have 1 real RW on the team as far as I can see.

But I am not a GM, and JB has gotten to the highest position in the game for a reason, so...

So much hinges on internal growth from some unknowns

Mitts
Dahlin
Jokiharju
Pilut
Olofsson

Could even add Ullmark and Thompson

We don’t know the above in terms of what their ceilings are

if you are not close for playoffs with eichel, reinhart, skinner, casey, cozens, dahlin, montour, miller, joker, risto

and add vesey, johansson

you as a gm have no clue how to build a team

if cozens sticks and gets 40 points
and dahlin takes a half step forward

then there is no reason, this team is not knocking on the door to make a playoff push in the spring

and no reason to expect anything shy of playing in the second round of the playoffs in 2021

- homiedclown

Cozens came in for lunch a couple times (with Pekar) when he was here rehabbing

He looked pretty skinny to me
I think he’s gonna need at least a year to get bigger & put on some weight

Asplund could see some time up here though
I really liked the few times i saw him in the 2nd half of last year

the more I think about it, he was up front a lot that season

played center during the middle of the season

and took extra shifts on the wing and played wing on second pp unit to try to get the record for points for the last half of the season

My thing is though you can shelter any legit NHL’er and they will look better.

Plenty of good players play on bad teams and don’t have as bad of results

I do think he’s capable of bottom 3 D minutes and PP time though

- sbroads24

I’m not talking about sheltering him though
I’d just like to see Risto on a team that isn’t constantly caved in
If he has some help, i think we can see the “good Risto” much more consistently

I'm ready to boil the season down to him basically.

If he's a 50+ point guy, I'm a believer.

That's a steep hill to climb

they took their time grooming olofsson and asplund in rochester last season

made them work together a lot

on the regular line

on the pp

and they were partners on the pk

it's as if they knew the kids would be in the nhl in the fall and wanted to prepare them for all situations

Depends what u mean by “win”
I do think we finally talke a step forward & contend for a playoff spot

- jdfitz77

Indeed. “Winning” varies greatly from fan to fan. Though most fans should agree that back-to-back wins at some point would be a nice place to start.
To some, not being out of the playoff race by New Years would be a step forward. Or a point total in the 80s. Or maybe just not looking completely outclassed on a nightly basis.

Sabres were 21st in expected goals for %. That’s bad but nowhere near the previous years bad

Ristolainen was 7th in expected goals for % among Sabres D

The Sabres got worse with Risto on the ice.

And I know he had tough matchups

I think you’re a little too worried about RW

Johansson played really well at RW with Boston in the playoffs, so it seems he’s fine on that side

Sheary won a couple Cups on the right side with Kunitz at LW & Crosby at Center, didn’t he?
I’m guessing that’s why Botts has been saying he can play RW too

Vesey is listed at both wings, although i have no idea how much RW he’s played

And there’s always your boy Tage,
if he can figure out how to hit the freaking net once in a while 😂😂😂

Might not look ideal...
but it’s not terrible either

I think if the last 10 games mean something other then a bottom 5 lottery pick, it will be a good season

Brodie is a LH guy, correct?

I guess that fits
But i think I’d rather have a legit scoring winger

Ehlers is still the guy I’m hoping for

I have heard no chatter on risto or calgary, just spitballing what would work for both teams

since 3 of calgary's top 4 d men are Lefties

and 2 are UFA;s in 11 months
