Well... fair assessment I guess. At least it wasn't a hidden anti JJ article.

Makes sense. He is 23 and on his 3rd team. He was put into spots and hasn't performed to the level they thought he would. I'm not a big fan of him on the first line because I prefer Jake on the left side. |

Yes. His name is Matt Murray. McCann is a dime a dozen player. |

My B. I fudged the numbers a bit by going Even Strength instead of 5v5.
What we’re really expecting here is that last year is the start of a trend for Tanev with production that is in the ball park of Rust’s but not there. IDK for me I’m not going all in on one year of sample when rust has had three years of producing at a consistent 1.7 pts/60 rate at 5v5 with a higher rate at even strength as a whole, meaning he’s skilled enough to be deployable at 4v4 and 3v3 situations. - Victoro311
I'd trust Rust too more than Tanev because of a larger sample too. I was merely comparing Rust to Tanev last year to show that Rust isn't doing anything important or irreplaceable offensively that they'd miss if he was traded.
A couple points on samples though. For Tanev, get earned an elevated roles for the first time and did well with it, so it's possible he can do it moving forward.
We also probably shouldn't assume things like Simon continuing to be an advanced stats god either since he only did that last year. |

14 minutes of ES TOI at 1.86 would be 35 points. Factor in a couple special teams points and you’d arrive around 40 points. On my post last blog I put McCann at 44 points if he played with Sid and Jake. I think it’s attainable if he took that spot all season
McCann looked tentative at times. Seemed like he was putting himself a step behind and he whiffed some 1-T’s setup by Sid and Jake. Maybe he hasn’t settled in yet. We’ll see. He did score empty netters last year but if Sullivan is going to continue to put him in a spot to do so, then he’ll likely continue to get at least some EN goals/assists. I like McCann but I think Kahun and Galchenyuk are better players overall |
|
|
|
Side note: without an increase in scoring pace McCann would need 17 minutes averaging 1.86 to hit 43 points. At times last year Rust was in the 17-21 minute range so it’s possible. I think Kahun and Chucky are more likely to hit 40 even strength points given proper TOI/QOT |

Personally, I think people are underrating Rust. IMO, he's a solid 2nd/3rd line winger who can play higher up if needed. I think people get WAY too hung up on points. I also think JR overreacted to a slight dip in production last year.
Tanev, to me, looks like a career 4th liner and a player that you often find on an ELC for about 1/4 of the cost. He's actually slightly older than Rust so I don't hold out hope that he's going to magically transform into something significantly better. There's also just as good a chance his last season was an outlier rather than a trend, that's why you like to see more than one year before offering a ridiculous contract, especially at his age.
McCann looks about the same to me, but he's young and maybe elevates his game to be a solid 2nd/3rd liner. I have a feeling JR is champing at the bit to offer him a $3.5+ mil long-term extension with a M-NTC just as soon as he has a couple of good months to start the season.
I would rather trade JJ and a 1st and have ZAR as the 13th forward than to just give away Rust for nothing or close to nothing (3rd round pick or later). |

Not arguing with RW on this (It was a nice blog) but I don’t think he was a “throw in” on the deal. I thought the addition of him to the deal was what cost the Pens the picks that were added. |

Can I see the chart on a confidence boost that comes with having successful time spent with the best center in the game? Useless article, useless numbers. Surprised the shooting percentage fairy wasn’t brought up. That one is always my favorite. |

Who would be the best person for the expanding team to take from the penguins? I think hornqvist is up there. If Johnson isn’t moved yet, he’s my number 1. Tanev is another one. |
|
|
|
We're asking 1.2 Million worth of production out of McCann
Ok, maybe 1.7 million worth because we overpaid Tanev and McCann needs to make up that 500k...
McCann easily fits in the Top 9 and has proven he can move up when necessary. where's the problem? |

I think the Pens protect their roster in such a way that Horn is the most appealing option and that's how they go about moving him off the team
I think guys like Simon and Tanev get protected (and 1 of Rust of Bjug get traded) to make Horn "The only good choice"

Crosby
Malkin
Jake
Kahun
Simon
Tanev
Rust or Bjug (whatever one isn't moved)

Shooting percentage is imaginary but a confidence boost is iron clad? Great logic caveman. |

I think Hornqvist has to be protected.
It's hard to predict this early, there could be a lot of turnover next year with all the free agents and limited cap space. |

$10MM to sign Point, Erne, and another forward or bring up a guy like Raddysh. Seems pretty optimistic, guy |

He's only got a NTC, so they don't have to protect him
Unless he has a great season, I think they want to move off that 5.3 million

Protect Tanev? Are you nuts? It would be like a 'get out of jail free' card for that terrible contract. What if Tanev is just a ~25 point player who runs around and hits people? There's a very real possibility that's who he is. I was actually worried that his M-NTC (also absurd) would prohibit the Pens from exposing him.
I would protect every other forward before protecting Tanev and I think it is an easy case to make. |
