I feel like 6 years and 10 million is fair for both.
You're not going to do 5 because Matthews is up in 5, you're not going to do 4 because it walks him to UFA, maybe a 3 year deal. It has to be 3 or 6 IMO. I don't think he wants 7 or 8 based off of what I read and 2 is just a stop gap and puts the team back in this situation before you know it. |

IF he really wanted to be a TRUE Leaf, he'd be happy with 6/yr for 8 years. Where else would he want to play.

Stupid or just bad at trolling? Stupid would be the more generous explanation because it’s not something you choose. |

I have heard that he'll sign a 8 year at 8million AAV contract if:
1/ he becomes the Captain
2/ Leafs trade Nylander |

Did some cycling/boozing/boozing/boozing in Niagara on the Lake this weekend.
Got talking to a nice dude at one of the breweries - he told us about The Blueline Diner in Niagara Falls:
http://www.bluelinediner.com/home
Marcel Dionne owns it, and apparently he's in there almost every day.
We didn't end up going, but if I'm ever in Niagara Falls for breakfast, I'll check it out.

I think 6/10M is fair as well..
If the ask is $10M per season on a 3 yr deal though, that's a bad idea. IMO.

The last bit was about term. 3 years would probably be like 7.5-8 I'd imagine.

I'm sure that's why the leafs haven't done that deal.
Marner is trying to set a new precedent with "bridge" contracts. |

Aho just signed for 8.5 x 5yrs
I have to assume TB gets point for something close to that and Rantanen
why does Mitch get a lot more

Cause Point and Rant will probably wait until Marner is signed and then sign for similar to what he got.
Although I would prefer Point and Rant sign prior to lower Marners number. |

4y at 7.5mln? - MaximusAurelius I honestly have no clue. I don't believe 4 years walks him to UFA so the term is a possibility. That actually seems to make a lot of sense for both sides. He gets a hefty raise and the ability to negotiate his big deal at 25 that would see only 2-3 years of his UFA years taken up. With that last bit, I'm assuming contract lengths become shorter in the next CBA.

I would agree on the shorter contracts. I think as well that players will switch teams more because of it; 3-5 years (after first contract) with the team that drafted them, then switch to another team (they like more or they feel that will give them better chances of winning a SC). Players can add more at 26-30 and therefor can help a team win a SC instead of the 34-36y old that join 'the team of their dreams'.
so the younger players joining a team might do that for just 1-2 years at 25-28 for a SC run.

- MaximusAurelius I'm well aware of the tweet. I'm not looking this up, but I'm pretty sure it was after the Bruins knocked out the Rangers in 2013 so it's understandable.

i know you are well aware
it was just to emphasize that players will probably change teams more easily.
(if i'd be a very good NHL player, I'd definitely want to try and play for all original six teams at least 1 season; to get the complete NHL experience :D ) |

Agreed. Its been very apparent in the last three playoff series that the Leaf top forwards just aren't tough enough. Not sure anything has been done to address it. Like they say...the definition of insanity... - RippedFuel
