after the past month has afforded me to calm myself about Simmonds. .it's re-registering that we paid 5mil, albeit 1 season, but 5 MIL for a guy that was terrible last year. I'm going to just assume other teams were offering 4.5 for 1 year.. because all things considered, that's batpoop crazy. I know Shatty was bought out, but if Simmonds had more years on that deal he might've been bought out also, with the way he was playing.

psh. unreal. psh.

Team is still 8 mil under the cap, Simmonds is a calculated risk and at one year, not a bad one. Maybe he finds his PP game again with this mix, if not I could think of a lot worse 3rd line guys, a few of them played on our top line a couple of years back.

I know I know I know about our cap, and I'm not complaining about 5mil. I just think it's kind of preposterous that he could get 5mil, whether it's 5 mil for 3 years, 2 years or 1 year. What makes him worth 5mil at all after such a piss poor season, and trend of decline?? What have you done for me lately?

It means another team offered slightly higher over 2 years. Our GM has made mention of weaponizing cap space, that’s all this is. We had room and could do in 1 year what other offered in 2. The player sees as an opportunity to regain his previous market value. NJD sees as a short
Term investment to mentor/protect the small and young’s. Last year means nothing. Time to let it go.

He was still on pace for 20+ goals and 35+ points before the trade to nashville, 5 mil made sure he wouldn't wait out for any long term offers.

there's the that calming tea, right on schedule from the ever educating and respectable Larsson. ok, fair enough, I guess? 5mil for 35pts, after he totaled 46 last year. It's good he can put in some goals and bring grit and strength. I keep forgetting this is 2019. 5mil for a year. still a bit much for the "off" season he had.

I'm embracing the Simmonds thing though. I'm so ready for this season to start. The x-factors are endless, I think mainly because half of our players are young and developing, so they all should be better than last year.. and given how many of them we have, that's like half of the returning roster potentially better than last year.. then add a #1 LW in Hall, #1 dman in Subban, and who the heck knows if Gusev could actually put up 60+.. exciting times.

There is no way Hall stays in that toxic waste dump you people call NJ. CS is your goalie, PK is on the wrong side of 30 and Nico will bomb this year.

You heard it first from a Ranger fan.

yeesh. I think I'd rather Shattenkirk than Mueller. I know this is moot now, but I just can't get behind Mueller.. like at all. He's thankfully (hopefully) the 8th option for our defense. He struck me as too slow mentally and physically last season.
- MartysBetter88

I'm no fan of Mueller, but Shattenkirk was not good last year. The one thing he's still good at is the one thing our D group does not need more of. Subban, Severson, Vatanen, Smith, Butcher can all do fine on the PP.

This may be the saddest comeback I’ve ever heard. Good luck buddy. Sounds like your not playing with a full deck.

I'm expecting Shatts to bounce back from the injury; but you are right our need is good defenders vs. point producers. I get that Shatts was never a particularly good at defense.

While I'd love to have a shut down guy I'd like to see what the current guys can do.
PK might not be the shut down defender we need but he should allow us to move guys down in the lineup to where they can be more comfortable.

He will. I don't think Subban is terrible defensively. Where does Todd get all his fancy charts from? does he make them himself based on advanced "metrics"? Where's he find the metrics? I want the numbers to support discussion in this topic.

I'm still unsure which of our dmen are average or above average at defense. Who are they putting out there in crunch time? Vatanan and Subban? Is Subban one of the guys? Severson?

Even with all the attention Subban is getting this offseason, I'm praying for Smith to be our franchise saver on defense. My eyes are on him and the development of Butcher. I thought he impressed in the few games I saw last year. . and followed it up by winning CHL defenseman of the year.. my hopes are high.

I think 27.

Holik, Johnny Mac, Joe Cillera were all old players. Anyone else?

One of my Ranger friends would always call these guys '(frank)ing spies' for the Devils because they played badly for NY.
