Hughes is practicing up in Nova Scotia with Crosby, MacKinnon and Marchand. Not so bad

Most players only have bad blood when the clock is running.

This is Greene's last year and possibly Vatanen's too. So it wouldn't be horrible to add a quality defender. My preference would be Gardiner but I think Shattenkirk could be a good buy low opportunity. Either guy on a short term deal could be a good move and maybe trade chips; meaning either move them or another guy like Vats if we have extra.

We have a lot of guys right now but how many are legit NHL top 4 defenders and how many guys end up getting hurt every year? Who's going to stay and who's not?

I'm not saying going hard after either guy but if the situation is good it's worth considering.

We already have tons of offensively capable defensmen, 4 quality RHD, Shattenkirk is not what we need. You could make an argument for Gardiner but Shattenkirk is a hard no.

lol so good. Thank you KK and LJ! I haven't thought about it like that. Really "CS" struggled a lot too, so it was a combined effort.. plus Hall's injury.. plus lotto balls.

After years of feeling like the hockey world hated us, and us winning despite that.. it seems we're WINNING. The Shero-effect? Was he the GM in Pittsburgh when they won the lottos?

I loved Lou, the godfather, and all he did for us. I had a hard time the first year transitioning to Shero.. but I just can't imagine Lou being as solid as Shero has been, especially this offseason. You can't be disappointed. Hard to give Ray anything less than a B+ grade.

If he was a lefty then i'd consider signing him, but we have too many rightys already, so pass. Smith deserves to be on this team and not in the press box, and he's already likely the 6th/7th Dman
- vlongo4419

Smith and Vats are both going to have to switch to LD, where they have played in the past. Sorry, but our "C" does not belong in our lineup, if we are playing our best players:

Butch P.K.
Vats Severson
Smith Carrick

Thos are our best players. I still would like to see Vats and another asset moved for a forward or LD if possible, which would bounce Greene back into the lineup.

Its always hard to remember who to thank for accomplishments! Cs certainly did struggle, tho i suspect he has rebounded! And Shero has been amazing! Just look at his trades! Short of the trade deadline Grabner/Maroon trades, he has won.
Lou was GREAT!!!! I will never forget what he did for this club. That being said, I am really scratching my head with the moves he has made in NYI, but not my problem.

The Maroon trade was great I thought.. he did so well for us. I would have loved to keep him but with the fast team we have he would have slowed his line down.

He’s going to make a truckload of money and live happily ever after. The only question is where. Hint - not NJ.

I'm happy with the deal. Butcher is by far the most difficult to evaluate. A 3rd yr on his ELC would've helped sooooo much in knowing his value. 2 night & day different seasons.

You can brag about his efficiency all u want but if your not the most efficient defenseman on the roster avg'ing over 3 minutes per game on the PP there's something wrong. It was like halfway thru the season when he was even with Lovejoy in EV strength pts. That's soooo far from what u should b getting from your "most offensive" defenseman.

Rookie yr he was great on the PP. He was 1 of the biggest reasons why we made the playoffs with how good he was on the PP. This past season he took a huge step back on the PP. Not long after Hall was lost he was taken off the #1 unit & replaced with Severson. If Severson had started the yr on the PP & had 33 games with Hall on the PP I will guarantee you he would've had over 50pts. So now that we've added some high powered offensive players what is Butcher's role on the PP?? For the last few yrs we've had 1 defenseman on the 1st PP unit & 2 on the 2nd PP unit. With so many offensive weapons now will we use 1 defenseman or 2 on the 2nd unit?? PK will obviously run the#1 unit. Then how much time on the 2nd unit will be given to Severson Vatanen Ty & Butcher?? It's very reasonable to think after last season & this yrs additions that PK will run the #1 & Severson will run the #2 or it could be Severson & Ty on the 2nd unit. If Butcher's defense are as good as analytics are saying they are will he be a better fit as a penalty killer?

Going into training camp the left side of the D can play out in about every conceivable way. The right side we think will b set in stone as PK then Severson. If Hynes isn't happy with what he's seeing on the top left will he try to put Severson there?? Will he try Severson there right from the start?? Should we expect to see Greene stay with Severson or Maybe stay on the top pairing like he's been for yrs now. Greene on the top pair would certainly give PK the most freedom to put up as much offense as possible. Can Butcher move up & play with PK? Will Vatanen have a big bounce back yr with PK being the #1 & him being the #2? Will Carrick come in & take the #3RHD spot which could send Ty back to Jr's. There really should be some kind of exemption to be able to go to the AHL a yr early. That's a whole new discussion.

This is going to be a significant yr for Butcher!! He could literally go from playing as the #1LHD & QB'ing the 2nd PP unit to having no role on the PP & playing on the 3rd pair. If that's not the hardest contract to figure out I don't know what is. I think it's a right in the middle fair deal. I'd like to see him on the 2nd pair with Severson with PK time. We've got to start grooming someone to take over on the PK for Greene. This could be Greene's last yr. Instead of Greene leading the league in PK time when we're up by 2 goals we should let Butcher run the PK. I'd like to see Butcher avg about 1:30 per game on the PK for the 1st 25 games & see what his results are

possession metrics, zone entries, shot suppression. Stuff like that. I don't think counting stats like goals and assists are all that important because there is a lot of variance in that kind of stuff. A guys shooting percentage might just take a dip one season and just might have bad "puck luck" so nothing goes in but the guy is involved in a lot of high danger chances. This is something that happened with Max Domi when the Coyotes sold really low on the guy but there was no way he was going to have a career 3% shooting percentage with the number of changes he took.

I wonder if Shero tries to trade Hall if he remains undecided by the deadline, especially if we're in a playoff spot.

If Hall hasn’t committed to NJ by the trade deadline Ray Ray has to move him regardless of if we are in a playoff spot or not.

Either he resign or we trade him for assets. We can’t let him walk and end up empty handed.

we really can't. seen that show too many times before. Plus, we have the 2 centers with potential to be Crosby-lite and Zetterberg/Bergeron.. plus whatever Gusev and Smith amount to. If we lose Hall it's not the end of the world with the assets coming back to go along with the timeline of the 2 centers.
