Trying to understand how this benefits the Sens in any way? They want to retire Callahan as a Senator? I would think there are much better ways to get a cap hit.

Not if the objective of the miser owner is to hit the cap floor but not have to pay out an actual salary.

Callahan’s contract is most likely insured so they won’t be spending actual dollars.

The answer to any Senators question is usually:

Because Melnyk is cheap

Melnyk doesn't give a poop about that. He's a penny pinching miser

Trade was made because insurance will pay most of Callahan’s contract.

Will/Can Ottawa not put him on LTIR and just use the cap hit to get to the floor and he is just the “13th forward”

Wonder how that would affect insurance payouts.

If memory serves me they do not have to put him on LTIR and can use the cap hit.

Don’t quote me though.

Seems a little ridiculous they can use the cap hit on a player that can't play ever again.

What's ridiculous is a player developing an allergic reaction to his equipment after playing 19 years and over 1300 games in the NHL and going on LTIR for the last four years of his contract, because it was all front loaded and he was only getting $1m a year the last four seasons compared to $7.9m a year the first seven seasons.

Clarkson went out to vegas for 1 day, then flew back home to coach high school hockey team

Not saying you, but what is all this hate for the guy and this arbitration hearing? First, the Sabres chose to qualify him, wanting him on the team (AHL move). Next the player has the option to go to arbitration or not (he must think he would get a better deal that way, which is his right).

I know the player is not a difference maker at all and pretty replaceable, but what is the problem? A guy wants to get the best pay he can for a job that could leave him injured the rest of his life. You would do the same. As for the team, he should be a low cap hit, who should be top 9 in AHL, can we be mad at the Sabres for wanting to improve (win) Rochester?

Played with McDavid, Strome and Debrincat in Erie. Outscored Strome and Debrincat in the playoffs.

From HockeyDB:
In terms of NHL potential, he projects as a Matt Martin-like bottom-six energy winger with the high end potential of a complementary goal-scorer, "glue guy", similar to Chicago's Bryan Bickell.

Not the biggest problem we have to worry about.
