He is that good him being sent down last year is like if we sent The Swedish Jesus down for no reason

Unconfirmed source reports the Devils have acquired Nikita Gusev from the Golden Knights without giving up a player or a 1st round pick. Also reports an announcement coming between this evening and Wednesday morning.

Trying to confirm info.

This is a good fit, since they have the cap room to make it happen and they should be pushing to be better after getting their second 1st overall player on the team.

As with F's and D-men, we are seeing escalating salaries for very very good players.
Vasy is one of them in goal, but he played like poop in the most recent playoffs... odd timing from that perspective, but would likely have cost more next offseason.
It's a gamble, but he is an elite goalie overall.

- IonSabres

Vasy will be 25 to start the season. I think that is a good signing for a relatively young goalie. Compared to Price at 32, Bob at 31, lundqvist at 37, Rask at 32 and Fleury will be 35 in November. Those 5 were the highest paid goalies before this contract. If Vasy were to hit the open market, he probably would be the highest paid goalie.

All you're really saying is that this contract is less of a mistake when compared to those contracts. It's still an awful contract.

Is he really worth a first round pick though?

NJD is potentially giving a 1st, so I wouldn't pay that price.

- thatsapickle

The tweet I posted said they did not give up a top prospect or a 1st round pick. So it seems like it could have been a second rounder and a mid level prospect.

Edit: I am not saying I would pay that price, but he could be really good.

No problem. When I read it first I saw first rounder and thought they paid that too. I mean Vegas just signed this dude and will get an asset for him, so good for them. It may be better to try to fit him on their own team, but seems that is not working.

I agree, just passing along what I have seen. There was a quote from the NJ owner saying he was still adding to the team, the other day. So this would make sense there. No way the owner says publicly that they are adding, if they are looking to add a 4th liner.

Dahlin-Risto
McCabe-Montour
Scandella-Miller
Nelson
Hunwick

Bogo and Pilut on IR, Jokiharju sent down. Pilut likely replaces Scandella when healthy, and Hunwick either gets waived or traded for a 6th. Same with Scandella when bogo is ready

Hunwick and Scandella are both reasonable depth for a cup team looking for a 6, 7, or 8 d man depending on injuries

- jcragcrumple

I feel like this didn't totally address the question. Even if you put both on IR, there's little chance it lasts more than a month. And one is waiver exempt. So you have an extension of 1 month to get rid of a defenseman.

Reasonable trade candidates are Hunwick, Bogosian, Ristolainen and Scandella. One of those 4 must be moved.

There will be injuries in that time frame. I remember we were having these same conversations about forwards last offseason, and Botterill basically played the IR game until Berglund went AWOL. I'm not saying there won't be a move, but Botterill can play the IR shuffle with the best of em.

Not sure why a McCabe filing would in any way impact a Scandella trade. Everyone knows what he'll make in arb, spare a couple 100k in either direction.

I would love to see him stay up for sure, but unless the are several trades, it is just too administratively easy to send him down versus unloading other guys to "fit" him into the starting lineup

Yeah, there's injuries. But unless a third guy goes to IR for a while (Not LTIR), a move must be made. There's 9 NHL non waiver (including Dahlin) dmen. The team can only realistically carry 8.

It could be something as simple as waiving Nelson or Hunwick.

I want to see a meaningful d man trade as much as anyone else, but I can easily see them making some simple decision like that

Before most recent awards this season, I never expected Erod to get $2.0m ... figured closer 1.5 or so.

Your guess on McCabe award is what?
