exactly, that's the only year they tanked.
the previous decade they just sucked really bad making the playoffs once and almost always drafting top 10.
then they got really lucky winning the lotery the Matthews year and signed Tavares. otherwise they would still suck as bad.

The 'draft-schmaft", trade picks and prospects for aging vets, don't bother to develop young players Toronto Maple Leafs are gone.

The Leafs' farm team is now a priority. Hell, they are so into developing players now that they are utilizing their ECHL affiliate - that's something that's never really been done before.

If they don't sign Tavares, maybe they do something else with the cap space.

Problem being, it justifies to socialist taxes in Canada vs the capitalist taxes in the US.
Now, if you did this using US taxes (for playing in the US) vs Canadien taxes (for playing in Canada), then this might be feasible. But 53%? Come on. That's ridiculous.
