They traded Jagr near the deadline the year they got the pick for Ovi...but I agree, I don't recall it as a tank job
- Takemedrunkimhome

Exactly.

A tanking team wouldn't have kept Jaromir (frank)ing Jagr for most of the season.

That said talk about an all time exchange of wingers. That's like the Pens going Mario to Sid

If I were to suggest an idea to help Canadian/heavily taxed teams, it should be this:

Teams that create the most revenue over a set amount (kind of like the salary cap amount) should be able to go over the cap by a certain amount. I have no fancy numbers, but teams like Montreal, Toronto, and other teams that pretty much pay for other teams to survive through revenue sharing (Carolina, New Jersey, Arizona...) should be able to draw more free agents than the teams barely starting alive. I'm not talking crazy amounts, but it would help with some of the teams with tax implications.

There are multiple ways for players to pay less taxes
The cost of living in Canada is also cheaper.

Only teams that probably rreally have an edge are the teams in Florida (or other states where taxes are super (frank)ing low).

Was Toronto intentionally trying to do poorly to get one of, if not the top pick, yes or no? Trying to make yourself feel better saying they tanked "less" is asinine
- Takemedrunkimhome

Pitt, Chi, LA tanked.
Toronto "tanked"

BIG difference.

I think everybody has their anecdotes and nothing is universal...but yes, many, many Leaf fans did...maybe a few years later it's easier to admit (and that's not a reference to you, more a generality)

They traded their best forward (Kessel) and their best defenceman (Phaneuf) for future help.

They signed absolutely nothing but garbage that offseason.

They basically held JVR out of half the season.

From February 29th until the end of the season, they made Garret Sparks the starter.

And if I haven't convinced you yet, let me just drop this truth bomb on you:

They traded for Martin Marincin.

They tanked.

And it was the best thing they could have done.

I would have embraced that kind of direction with trading Price and Weber 1-2 years ago, but too late now.

Big fan of the Rangers' style. Send a memo to the planet saying "WE ARE REBUILDING" and do it.

Well they did it.

For a year.

Then they signed the biggest UFA possible, traded for Trouba and now need to shed salary to fit the cap.

That's one quick rebuild.

One thing that the Rangers have on the Habs, is literally everyone wanting to sign there.

It brings back sweet, sweet memories of the Leafs in the 90s and aughts.

"We are going to reload, not rebuild!"

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

exactly, that's the only year they tanked.
the previous decade they just sucked really bad making the playoffs once and almost always drafting top 10.
then they got really lucky winning the lotery the Matthews year and signed Tavares. otherwise they would still suck as bad.

Jagr wasn't exactly a hot commodity coming off his time in Washington. he was seen as an aging, declining player with a salary few teams could afford.

Was still a ppg player with an expiring contract but yeah I remember how he was viewed in a negative way back then.
