Tank and get high picks. There. That's how you win.

Vancouver was a big player in UFA. Are they in better shape or in cap hell now overpaying supporting guys?

Robbing would be taking it without warning. This is an idea which could be discussed...Why should a player who worked hard to earn his money =earn less because he plays in Canada?
- Karine Hains

you can literally say this about any single profession. i have US colleagues earning similar incomes in low tax states. if i have to live with it, why shouldn't they?

Yup...my sales staff has people with worse numbers in Florida pulling better take home than colleagues selling a load more in Ontario. Nobody is suggesting taking 13% from the Florida guys to pay for a scholarship for women in STEM...nor should they

Here's my idea as a Sabres fan: all NHL players have to stay inside between November and March because our weather sucks. That evens the playing field.

Every team has problems, this is a problem for your government to solve, not the NHL.

That's how Pittsburgh and Chicago won. Yes.

yeah i'm having a hard time getting on board with this. not sure why the players should fund a women's league. money should come from the owners and no one else.
- DoubleDown

CBA negotiations are already going to be a bloodbath.

Adding in a complicated formula on tax rates which would divert money to a women’s league is simply a non-starter.

Washington did as well it just took much longer.

To me it's not just about winning the cup, it's about obtaining a core that can contend and give you a chance as opposed to overpaid stiffs signed July 1st

I don't recall Washington tanking.

They did have bad results but they never "sold" their core with the idea of tanking.

They drafted Ovechkin and Backstrom in the top 5.

I'm not saying I disagree with the concept of focusing on the draft but I think the idea that the Pittsburgh model is "THE" way to win is wrong.

id almost put LA in there. they were terrible for a few years and built a lot of those teams through the draft.

True.

Generally teams that win cups get #1 top picks and a couple of higher good top 5 or 10 picks.

they tanked in the sense that they were the worst team in the NHL. whether by design or incompetence isn't really the point.

I feel like this is different.

Tanking has a voluntary meaning to it imo. Being bad is just.... well being bad.

yeah the Kings had to be shrewd getting guys like Quick, Kopitar, Muzzin, Brown outside of the top picks

They "Tanked" less than teams around them. Check out the numbers. They finished 15 points better in 2015-16 when they finished last overall than Buffalo the previous year, and 21 points better than the Avs, who finished last the year after.

If you go back to early 200's they were getting top picks.

I think everybody has their anecdotes and nothing is universal...but yes, many, many Leaf fans did...maybe a few years later it's easier to admit (and that's not a reference to you, more a generality)

I guess I just have a different definition of tanking.

They sucked, but I don't recall them selling their assets for picks with the idea of getting worse so they'd get better picks for a few years like Chicago, Pittsburgh, Edmonton and Toronto did

ok Karine - you got me away from my homebase for this reply

If I am reading this right, you are basically saying that the teams that have a tax advantage be forced to help supplement a WNHL?

- scott@SCF

Yup that’s it in a nutshell i know there would be many kinks to work out but i think it could be interesting

Was Toronto intentionally trying to do poorly to get one of, if not the top pick, yes or no? Trying to make yourself feel better saying they tanked "less" is asinine

They traded Jagr near the deadline the year they got the pick for Ovi...but I agree, I don't recall it as a tank job
