I think Packsey stayed it pretty well. Lots of teams just name their best (future leaders) early on. Pretty sure after 2 years in the QMJHL Crosby was not NHL captain ready but... and he turned out to be a great team captain.

I think it should be awarded annually, and there shouldn’t be any bs ceremony involved. Players have a vote, coach accepts players decision, or chooses someone they think is better suited. This whole C until you retire or get traded thing is stupid.

Since this is the place to argue, I’ll just say that your list doesn’t take into account WHEN those guys were named captain. Case and point, Chara was named captain of the Bruins in 2007, he was arguably their best player, the next year or the year after he won the Norris Trophy and I think he got Hart votes as well.

The Canucks had one job this summer and it was not to take on any significant money for 2021-22 and beyond when Pettersson and Hughes come up for new deals. Then they went out and committed $14.75M for those future seasons to J.T. Miller, Tyler Myers and Micheal Ferland.

It’s not even Jim Benning’s fault. He’s obviously doing everything he can to try and make the playoffs and save his job. It’s just bad ownership to be in that type of short sighted position and allow it to happen in the first place.

The Canucks are definitely going to be better next season. They’re also likely going to be up against the cap ceiling, down a future first round pick, and competing for 5th place in the worst division in hockey. The lack of business sense and asset management is something else.

to me the captain has 2 main responsibilities: 1) talk to the refs on the ice; and 2) talk to the media off after games (win or lose.)

you need a cool customer and bo is the obvious and right choice. i don't think who the players want really matters.

as for LEADERSHIP, there's a going to be a group of 4-6 in the room and on the ice who the players look to and listen to. some will have letters on their jerseys, some won't.
