you are correct, I carried the 1 (59.5->70...

My bad.

We’ll see how Hughes does the next couple years. All this posturing by the current RFA’s makes me think the incoming superstars will be even more expensive.

I still think Benning (he will get a contract extension) will have his challenges fitting everyone in. Unless Joulevi, Woo, Rathbone and a few others step in and really look like top 6 D he’s going to have to go shopping for some UFA’s.

- 1970vintage

It'd be hard to argue that, but, I think he will be able to and probably with little difficulty.

Benning said in an interview, they have done cap projections for the team for the next 2-4-6 years ahead. The only thing that will change that too much will most likely be players doing better than they were projected to. Which is a very good thing.

If your team isn't running into a bit of a cap issue, you probably aren't doing a very good job as a GM.
- manvanfan

It means you have some great players for sure. It’s really only that year that could be an issue. It could also turn out to be nothing, but your plan shouldn’t be “I’ll just buy out those three guys, problem solved”

That or put the guy on LTIR for the season.

It might be the plan, it's allowed. I'm sure it's not what an owner wants and if you have to buy out 3 players, most likely the GM haven't been doing a very good job unless it's someone else's mess.

Oh you can clearly see Bracketts work littered over the past few drafts - he's a very well spoken/intelligent guy from anything I've ever seen of him. So our next GM errrrrrr????
- Brooks_Light

So for a decade he sits back twiddling his thumbs, doing SFA, gets promoted and gets credit for all the good drafting while Benning gets the sh!t..

I personally think it is a committee thing, but hey, to each their own opinions.

Why not? That isn't much different than "weaponizing cap space" is it? I mean, the obvious difference is that youre not acquiring assets but either way, youre burning the owners money for the benefit of the team....

Because buying out guys still means you have a portion of the cap hit, and you have to pay another player to fill that spot.

Scott Wheeler of The Athletic (subscription required) has released his top-50 drafted prospect list, and recent first overall selection Jack Hughes comes in on top. The list includes 11 others from the 2019 draft, but is also led by names like Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar who made their NHL debuts at the end of last season. Notably the Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers each have two players in the top-10, giving them plenty of hope for the future—and the present, if Makar and Kaapo Kakko have anything to say about it.

Who's got the list? I need a good laugh this afternoon.

I might be a little thick this monday morning, I was trying to come up with available experienced GM's, I am a 2/3rds supporter of Benning and 1/3rd not, is there an experienced replacement.

Big deal. Thats what you do when you weaponzie cap space isn't it? If youre not putting a player on LTIR, youre buying them out.....

Its a silly argument.

Brutal list. Hughes is 3rd and Podkolzin didn’t even make his top 50

Leftcoaster= Lefty. His love for Hextall.

Ron Francis would have been a very good replacement. He's about the only guy I would have replaced him with.

It seems to be a job for the younger now. Going to need to come up with new names. Dubas, Chyka types.

Podkolzin just seems to be the same as EP that people don't believe in his talent. Shall see in a year or two who's right.

I thought Steve Kournaious list from the hockey news he wrote last season was pretty good. Better than Wheeler and Pronman's.

Maybe they haven't been around long enough, I'd rather have Benning over those two mentioned, Francis would have been a good replacement, I guess how well the team produces might solidify Bennings tenure or unemployment claim.

It's hard to find a list of Assistant Gm's to go off of. Chyka was a business guy, Dubas came from the SSM greyhounds as GM there.

I'm not sure what I prefer in a GM. Drafting has been good since Benning took over and that is the most hope I've had in a while. Easy to say because the two previous Van GM's were brutal at drafting.

Maybe it's an internal person like Brackett or Johnson that is being groomed for the position.

Where in the hot fawk did I say that? You might wanna change your translation settings from gross exaggeration to English for beginners.

Pre-Brackett as DAS the only pick that has any relevance is Horvat - Benning was hired a month before the 2014 draft so how much say did he have in it? Who made the Demko pick? Aquaman choosed jake - who picked "It is What it is McCann?"

Judd wasnt named DSA until Aug 2015 so who made the Boeser, Gaudette picks? More than likely Benning but Brackett was in charge of USHL so I assume he had a say in them - Lockwood, Rathbone, Madden picks were probably his. By giving Brackett credit it doesnt mean I'm poopt!ng on Benning. Hell I even liked the LInd, Gadjovich picks. I wanted Hague instead of LInd tho.

Seems like picking by committee but hey, to each their own opinions.
