We can debate the wisdom of signing Tavares, or the Matthews contract or giving up a first to get away from the Marleau final year...
It find it interesting that the Leafs now have almost no horrible contracts. There *may* be slight overpayments but they are for young payers.
The only contract you could seriously question is Ceci. I still think that is a head-scratcher. Why not let him go to arbitration, let him walk away, sign Marner, and pick up a Dman off the scrap heap. At the very least sign him to bonus heavy contract to make a trade somewhat easier.
The only answer is that the Leafs appear to think Ceci offers real value at 4.5. I have no idea what they are basing that on. By anything I have seen he is no better than the September dumpster dive-ees.
So Dubas gets full marks for fixing an enormous problem. It looks like he was just one big question mark away from pretty much a perfect off-season
so far. - Aetherial
I think that:
1. Dubas et al actually see something in Ceci amidst the Sens tire fire of a team; he could be right and a 1-year deal is perfect to find out.
2. We need somebody to play minutes and if anything, Ceci chewed up hard minutes in OTT; I don't know of any of RHD in the UFA scrap heap that can still do that and:
a) don't want term (0);
b) have averaged 20 minutes of TOI (0)

A team gave Hainsey another chance at 3.5, Ceci doesn't look too bad at 4.5 for 1 year.
( I thought Hainsey played "ok" last year ) |

excellent post.
wouldn't have minded Schenn back battling the Holls and Marancins for a final spot.

Hainsey playing on his strong side last year was solid if unspectacular, but we had to take Babs toys away or Hainsey would've been up with Rielly again. |

Worked fine during the reg season, not sure I'll lay all the blame on Hainsey for the playoffs...but whatever works. |

I'm guessing he said "Auston still got some baby fat on him, and around the :45 sec mark of his shift he's huffing and puffing on the way to the bench" - Garnie

I think there's 2 reasons for it.
1) They probably think that Cody is better than what he's been in Ottawa, so they have no problem giving him one year to see if they're correct.
2) They gave him that much because it gets the CAP exactly where they want it to be to get Marner in at the number he should be at (or close to).
That's how I see it at least. - GreatGigInTheSky
Looking forward to see what Ceci can provide. Most suspect he has been misplayed in Ottawa, which we will soon see this season. If he has a really good year, then our next problem is " can we sign him on the cheap ?" |

Imagine if that is totally the reason they did it, to box Marner in, Ceci would be the luckiest guy lol. MLSE just throws poops out money. |

It is what it is.
The contract Ceci's 1 year or less vs 5 years with Zaitsev
The backup position hans't really been addressed either. 5park5 and Hutchinson |

Yeah the thing about some of the difficult decisions they've had to make, like losing a first, Brown, trading Kadri and so on is on the other side of the ledger is The Snake, which makes it worth it. |

TOI/GP
#29 Auston Matthews
What are you talking about??????????
He's a 1:37 behind Mackinnon at #5, talk about reaching for excuses, and Mackinnon had no one close to John Tavares on his team to share ice with. - Garnie
Where are you getting these numbers from?
If you're talking about the postseason Matthews doesn't crack the top 80 and is about 4 minutes behind Mackinnon.
Regular season his TOI numbers are even lower. |

Matthews is the most underused star in the NHL,. It's not even debatable. His usage is a joke.
Babcock is costing us by not using his best players. Patrick Marneau's usage in the playoffs was terrible. "Patty will find the fountain of youth". Get the (frank) out of here, Mike. |
