What are the positives?
The flames don’t play against Lucic and more?
Ok...
Lucic likes to punch smith in the face?
Ok...
Lucic was a player I wanted to see in the flames 8 years ago. Not now. |

This is a terrible trade for Calgary by all accounts. Most would say Neal is better on ice and contractually.
If Neal did request out of Calgary and there were no better trades I’d rather stomach the 2 million cap hit over 8 years versus Lucic’s atrocity. Calgary could have done this and if they wanted grit sign Michael ferland and would have been cheaper.
Also Neal didn’t have a nmc and Looch does. This means that unless he waived it Calgary will be forced to protect him in the Seattle expansion draft.
Lastly this is poor asset management from Calgary which adds to the log jam at LW and thins up RW. Right now Calgary’s LW is gaudreau, tkachuk, Bennett, mangiapane, dube, and now lucic. So unless 2 of those are moved to the right side (or worse Bennett’s traded). This move does nothing for the flames at all |

If the conditional pick and salary retention are true then its a straight up hockey trade. Good on Holland and Tre. Both were in bad situations with these players being on horrendous contracts and vastly underperforming, all the while being the ire of their respective fan bases. Salary aside, this fills a need for both teams. Its extremely unlikely lucic returns to his 20g/50pt form but he at least gives us some much needed muscle and will be a capable bottom 6 forward. Neal will be afforded more opportunities to be in a scoring role and may flirt with the 20 goal mark again which Edmonton desperately needs. Additionally, due to Lucic waiving his no trade, neither player will have to be protected in the expansion draft.
It will be a good reset for both players.
Edmonton/La/boston fans, can you answer me this; Did you see Lucic play rw at all and if so, did he look comfortable there? |

After that first season in Edmonton I wouldn’t say lucic has provided them with much muscle at all. Maybe he was trying too hard to be a skill player but I would be surprised if his play changes much in Calgary. Also I might be wrong about this but I don’t think an nmc goes away if you waive it once. For example didn’t kessel waive to go to Pittsburgh and then just block a trade to Minnesota not to long ago |

If there is salary retention and a conditional pick, I don't absolutely despise it. Still not a big fan of it either way but it at least makes it better.
This is a straight up hockey trade. Lucic isn't going to be playing top 6 and does add some meanness to the lineup, which is something most Flames fans wanted, and it isn't like Neal lit it up last season. That said if Neal can find his scoring touch again then this could really bite the Flames in the ass.
I'll reserve final judgement until I actually see what happens on the ice, but this trade makes me real nervous. |

When Neal signed last year, I don't think anyone saw that season coming. Frankly, if you had to choose between 19 points, literally doing nothing and 20 points that at least hits somebody once in a while, it really doesn't matter.
I think the issue everyone had here is that Neal's season was seen as an anomaly and Lucic's was clear and ongoing regression. Tend to think Neal will bounce back to some degree, Lucic will be what he is for a year and will be exposed to Seattle next year.
The only way Tre comes out ahead here is if Lucic is exposed and taken next year, and he uses that cap wisely. There is a very real chance both these guys are exposed in the expansion draft next year and the trade is basically who did more in 19/20 than the other guy.
Don't like Lucic the player, don't like the move, but I'm not gonna get worked up about it until one of these guys outperforms the other this season. |

Yeah pretty sure no movement clause is part of his contract period, not a one time use get out of jail free card. Which besides having to protect him, means no waiver to buyout or send him to Stockton without his permission... |

Cordell you joke...sure here comes the spin with lucic being the better than Neal...lucic can't skate...no coming back from lack of speed...Neal can shoot and still score if you give him a decent center like he had in Vegas and will definitely have in edmonton...Calgary...not so much... |

Clearly Neal asked to be moved from Calgary going to Edmonton was a dream come true...so now it's kadri, mark stone, Mike Smith and now Neal...at least lucic agreed to go there...prob cause he still lives in edmonton... |

This is clearly a win for the Flames! (Depending if we dont have to protect him in the expansion draft) At the bare minimum Lucic will instil toughness for the team and make the Flames tougher to pay against. His true worth will be showcased in the playoffs where Neal was a healthy scratch. |
