The Avs would be an instant favorite for the cup - kaptaan
doubt the av's have circa $13M in cash to give marner tomorrw, plus something similar to ratanen.
av's don't do signing bonuses.

They don't have the compensation at 8.5-10.5 ...
Marner doesn't want long term ...
Avs arent' going 10.6+ for 5 years and paying 4 1sts ...
Rantanen would have to get same deal ...
Next .... |

that's the crux of it all.
habs proved this. they were only willing to go out with a limp Richard offer of 8.5M and 1 first. nobody is dumb enough to give up +10.5M in cap space plus 4 1sts. - Tumbleweed
I think it has to be 10.6 for the 4 firsts. |

Yup ...
No team is giving up 4 firsts for a short term deal with Marner.
Maybe MM changes direction and is willing to go long term but all signs point otherwise. |

Teams own the RFA. It's a simple fact.
No team is giving up nearly half a decade of future and taking an 11+ mil cap hit for a tiny play making winger. Having said that Marner is a great player maybe top 10 or 20 in the NHL, just not the player worth those two burdens.

If the Leafs don't believe Marner deserves a Matthews type contract then I say they sit tight all the way through to December. Don't give in, give a final offer and leave it at that. If Marner and agent reject it they lose a season and damage a bright career. |

Habs should give up the four first sign em for five years at 10 1/2. then just totally go for it if they're so smart and they're good with everything else, that all first-round pics gonna be late in the 20s or if they win the Cup then the 31 or two or whatever it's gonna be with Seattle. |

5-7 years**
8 year contracts are only for extensions signed with the team who owns the player's rights, and they have to be signed before July 1. Anything after July 1 for Marner can only carry a max term of 7 years. - Snowman X
yeah I saw that after.. |

Bolded teams don't have the cap space (or won't once they sign their own RFA's).
Only team that could even get into this game is the Isles, maybe. But even they'd have to free up some cap space by making a trade.
I don't see any match ... |

Habs only have about 5 milly in space. They'd have to make some other moves to free up 10.5+

Once you remove all the guys they'll lose to waivers/send to the AHL, they are pretty close to 10.5M I think.
They could make it work imo.
Won't happen though. |

Marner said he really wants to give back to the place he grew up, hopefully something can be worked out", I don't follow, "he wants to give back? No, he would like to play in Toronto if the price is right! |

I agree. The Islanders still have to plan for Barzal next year. He's probably going to end up in the 8.5 range, too.

Ya I saw CF had them with a huge roster. Didn't think they'd have 5 milly to waive through though?
But, ya. I don't see MM rolling the dice and heading up the 401 for a few extra bucks. Maybe ... |

If Marner would do 8 x 10.5 this would likely be done.
Rumour is Leafs had 8 x 10 on the table but MM wants short term.
I don't see any team (that's able to) going 5 x 10.5. |

If the Leafs don't believe Marner deserves a Matthews type contract then I say they sit tight all the way through to December. Don't give in, give a final offer and leave it at that. If Marner and agent reject it they lose a season and damage a bright career. - Mr_Smokey
yup - this.
and don't do what they did with Nylander at the 11th hour... which was essentially pay him back for the time he sat out...
if it comes down to that late a negotiation... the amount of the contract needs to be reduced by the amount of time missed....
then you don't get the inflated one year CAP hit and you reduce the effective avg - and if they lay this out now or at least prior to camp... then Marner and his family know how much they are walking away from in $$$ by sitting out.
I'm guessing walking away from 3.5(roughly)M$ out of 70M$ contract would be a pretty stupid thing to do.
I'd like to see one of these kids simply can their agent ... and just get the deal done.

Leafs are in a window to win. I'd rather they trade him before October 1 then let him sit for the year. (frank) that ....
Still thinking it's 6 x 9.5 ...maybe by October 1st. |

I still can't believe we signed John Tavares.
Also, we have 2 more legitimately elite forwards under 22 years old.
I think you can almost count rielly as an elite player as well.
We are worried about the cap because we have all these great players. Good problem to have IMO. Remember when Pylon and Hotdog were our best players?
