Thanks Carol.
I was viewing that other model of the guy who did the same sort of thing in projecting what players should get for their next contracts. He was bang on, on a few of them and a lot he was off by 5-8 hundred thousand off both ways, more and less.
It's hard to say whether a player is worth their contract or not because most people seem to view contracts in terms of either just good or bad. Two ends of the spectrum.
I think the Canucks clearly upgraded this year and I did post a chart the other day by I think it was evolving hockey that had said for players excluding goalies the canucks had the highest "WAR" added. |

@Vintage.
Good comparable's on contracts for players that were almost 14 years difference.
There are many examples we could go back and forth about a player that never lives up to their next expected contract after lighting it up for a year or two.
William Nylander might be one of those contracts.
You can pay for Boeser his 10 million a year he might be worth now. I'd prefer to know he can stay healthy for a year or two more. |

Still hilarious that a below .500 is in this sort of cap crunch.

Thanks Carol,
I read the article but I still can't get behind the logic of Dom's Analysis.
Comparing UFA signings in a vacuum doesn't work. IMO
Myers signed in 2019 with very few other options.
Faulk signed in 2014 as a RFA.
Apples to Oranges again.

I'm not paying a subscription for Dom's articles, although I have enjoyed some previously.
I pay for access to some of the best sports writers in every sport.
It's the cost of a beer at a pub a month...probably the best value purchase I make every month. |

@Minivan. I think the league is trending towards paying the future stars earlier (less bridge contracts, more high dollar mid term). Agents will bank on their clients getting the big payday on their 3rd contract when they are right around 26 in their prime. The guys like Hall, RNH etc who hit UFA at 29/30 are going to have to settle for the Myers like deals.
My bet, Boeser will sign a 4 year $30m deal and then at 26 as an RFA will look for the 8 year deal with a large number.
And I would rather risk that they don’t live up to it than to have a guy who performs for a year or two and then weighs you down. |

Also true. And there are a ton of factors that go into it: Competitiveness of the team, player loyalty, attractiveness of the market, demand for the player, etc. And after all that, the player's fit and performance are key as well. It's a metric that only tells you what you already know after it's happened. |

I don't even know where you came up with paying a 30 something year old vs a guy with two years.
As Donna had mentioned before that I agreed with, see Boeser sign a two year deal at 6 million to show he can stay healthy and stay productive. |

If the team is in the position to spend to the cap, they should do it. But hey, be a crusty whiner if you want. They haven't played the games yet. |

Exactly, why would they use all avenues to make the team better. That' stupid, right? Rather just be in here complaining about the team not winning year after year. |

First time since 07 Anaheim and 08 Red Wings that a team has won the Stanley cup without a drafted top 3 pick on their team. |

What I’m saying is that traditionally, guys got (frank)ed until they hit UFA status, which was typically not until age 29/30, as teams usually tried to “buy” some UFA years. I envision a scenario where agents know look for their clients to get paid earlier, and the guys who hit UFA status at 30 will be considered “old” and won’t be able to get the term they once did. We have, in fact, already started to see this trend develop.
I can’t imagine Boeser signing a 2 year deal but that’s just me. |

I’m not sure who the tweeners are? I mean, I don’t hate the moves this off season, does that upgrade me from hater to tweener? Or am I a hater to the core? I just don’t know anymore... |

The model misses the mark in my opinion - maybe i am missing something but a team could receive a high score by signing a bunch of average players to low cost contracts?
End of the day, it really just tells us what we already know...that the Eriksson and Sutter deals are bad. I am not as negative as the model about the Beagle (term is too long but see his purpose with the Sedins gone) deal and the Myers deal.
Also, EP and QU have two more years on the ELCs. |

That trend has been happy basically since the year of LE, KO, AL, ML, DB were handed 6 year deals that none of them have turned out well.
Paid earlier and paid before you deserve to be paid. Paid where the cap would project you to be paid.
You can get paid without breaking your teams cap though. Should a player like Boeser be worried about taking a 3 year deal at say 6.5 to get possibly 10 for 8 years after that? |
