I'm not saying he is going to get to 30/70. I'm saying that's what he needs to do to justify his stupid contract. I think the bud is off the rose for all three wonder kids this year, and they better be prepared for some harsh criticism as they will be judged on their ability to produce as top paid players in the league. Contracts they never should have received and can't possibly live up to. (assuming Marner gets what is rumored of course)

Yeah Matthews needs to smash 5v5 stats even more. Being the best at it isn’t enough...

That's awesome

It’d funny because Willie comes up with the puck in the corners more than most of the team.

And he drives the net a (frank) ton more than Kapanen does...who some think can replace Willie.

Anything less than a 100+ point season / Art Ross Candidate is a bust for MAthews this year. Getting hurt again and netting 70 doesn't cut it at his salary. He needs to be able to do it for 82 and playoffs.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Nylander will be right with Marner in points this year.

But I agree with the PP time...but I think Barrie is going to help and the PP will be changed up this year.

- Santo_44

assuming the Matthews/Nylander pair I agree they are probably close in 5v5 points
Marner probably get more PP points

I don’t agree, laugh away

He rarely went to the net last year, but I didn’t mark it down on my calendar when he did....so we’ll just agree to disagree.

such a negative way to approach watching your favorite team.

the amount of time some fans spend getting angry at what players make is something.

Matthews/Tavares/Nylander and Marner will all be worth the contracts they sign, I really dont doubt that.

If you attach specific numbers to your level of happiness about what a player makes..well I dont know what to say

Teams contract efficiency

Spoiler, Leafs are one of the top teams

Matthews is one of the most efficient players in hockey and projects to be the league’s second most valuable player during the life of his contract.

Watch closely this year.

And watch Kapanen do his little speed into the O zone and stop quickly and turn around.

He does that 99% of the time. He’s the one we should be begging to crash the net because with his speed it would create havoc.

I get that he had a concussion close the the playoffs which is maybe why he took his foot of the gas a bit....but even before that he did the same move every time.

I am hoping Nylander gets a bigger PP role.

Marner was getting stale last year...he is an incredible passer but with his shot he’s just not a threat. Teams found an easy way to cover his options and they were limited.

getting 70+ points mostly depends on PP time.
to date Nylander has been a very good 5v5 point producer. Also he probably wont score 30 goals. So far he gets around 200 shots a season @ 10% shooting. so maybe 20 goals.

Now if he went on a sh% bender he may hit 30, but he is a playmaker and imo should be stuck to Matthews all season (like Marner/Tavares) ..then there is nothing to worry about

- senstroll

I would expect production this year.

Last year, Nylander was 20th in 5v5 ixGF/60. He was 284th in iGF/60.

It translated into a very successful World Cup performance. If he keeps the playing the way he was, he'll produce.

Nylander's game isn't and has never been about going to the dirty areas. Neither is Marner's game or Matthews for that matter. Why do we demand that Nylander's style of play be grittier than the other skill guys?

Dom Luszczyszyn (aside from his unpronounceable name) has interesting articles but I think his views on players "efficiency" is flawed.

He's also pretty bias towards the Leafs... probably because he follows the same train of thought as guys like Dubas who eat corsi for breakfast.

The "problems" the Leafs are having are due to the level of talent vs. the cap. We should be loving these 'problems'. Aside from Ceci there are no bad contracts on this team right now. Do we need to get Wedgie to recite the 07/08 roster?

If Willie isn't your favourite player ..I get it. But Willie at 6.9 is low risk and is much more likely to look brilliant next summer than it is a bust. Not even close.

I don’t believe the bias...he said it in his article how the leafs are victim to the media...and people think it’s a good thing to have the media turn all their attention towards the Leafs

And as for his system I don’t think anyone’s is perfect...just like no opinion is always right. But he uses facts and compiles many different statistics to do it. If I don’t know anything about a player I’m going to his articles to find out.

Edit: also if you read his season previews he clearly states when he thinks his system is wrong about a player.
