Nylander has become criminally underrated. everyone judges him on last season and ignores all else. He shot half of his career shootiong % last season. Expect in a full season he'll have a career year with Matthews and his contract will look great.

Wasnt much choice they had to get rid of Marleau.
i hate the cost but at Least we know it wont be a 2020 top 10 they give up
Kadri out, Kerfoot in ...slight loss but maybe not as much as we think
Gardiner = Barrie
Connor Brown needs to be replaced by a Moore or another 700k player. not much to worry about there
also, if Mitch takes a sweet deal, maybe they can sign Gards

Let's not kid ourselves about the cap situation. We are in cap hell. We had to deal a first round pick to get out of the Marleau contract, we lost Kadri, we lost Connor Brown, we have to let Gardiner walk (polarizing opinions on the player EVERYWHERE, but he is a former 50 point dman, and those don't exactly grow on trees), and the losses are going to be felt even more next season when we lose most of our blue line to free agency. Nylander may still be traded yet. - Snowman X
I'd say 'were' in cap hell. After they sign MM they'll have their top9 forwards locked in for years and the bottom 3-4 guys will always be ELC's and cheap vets. The Defence will need some adds next summer but they'll have about 14 milly to spend on Dermott plus two more top 4 pieces.
Not bad at all ... |

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
We haven't even seen the new look of the team take to the ice yet and it's still doom and gloom. Kadri wasn't "just lost". He was traded for a very good RHD. - Aaron_85
If the Leafs do not win this season, they brought in Barrie to lose one season and lost Kadri anyway. Kerfoot is sticking around, which is nice, but Kadri is a cap casualty based on the term remaining on his contract.

They have 30 mill next year, expect at least 10 for Marner so a long ways to go with 20 mill left over. |

remember the good ol days in 2015 when there were no cap problems?
its the only thing that keeps me going watching this cup contender is knowing some day we will be back to the stress free cap space days of 2015 |

You've left out the fact we've added a much better DMan than Gardiner in Barrie for only 2.75. Connor Brown is not a big deal. Every team loses talent like that. Moore can do just as well.
And after Marner signs, we'll have 16-18 for next season. One of Barrie/Muzzin can be kept. |

Once marner signs the leafs should have at minimum a 5 year window.
That’s exciting, because we’re still in the beginning and the young guys should only get better over the next couple years. |

Why assume Barrie will never return? Remember when Marner was getting offersheets and Nylander 100% traded this summer?
It's tirseme hearing everyone is leaving the Leafs when the only ones that leave are beacuse the Leafs don't think they are worth the $ and supporting pieces. |

Kadri was traded when his value was still high. He's turning 29 soon and would enver again hit 30 goals on the Leafs. Heck, he might not ever on Colorado. He looked a little slower last season imo.
Kerfoot is almost 5 years younger, 1 million cheaper, and had almost as good stats in less TOI last year. |

I think you have it wrong. At what the leafs are paying Nylander the expectation should not be a rebound. They have paid him based on future expectations, not past performance. 20 goals, 60 points does not land you a 7 mil contract.
He needs to be a 30 goal, 70+ point guy to earn his paycheck and not be considered a bust player with a boat anchor contract. - B-Wforever
Have you not been following the NHL? 1 time 50 point guys now get 6-7 million. |

You guys are all missing the point. To say we are not in cap hell is just silly. We will have MAYBE $130,000 left under the cap when all is said and done, and we will be playing with no reserves for the most part. We'll be at around 21 players on the roster as opposed to the 23 most teams will carry.
I'd imagine the first argument people will make is that the cap is going up next year. The cap is not going up enough to keep Barrie, Muzzin and Dermott. Yes, Sandin and Liljegren may be ready by then, but you're talking about losing a LOT of veteran leadership on the blueline all at once. (Projections for Dermott on a long term deal are upwards of $4.5M, Barrie wants 8M+ and Muzzin will undoubtedly get a raise into the 5M-6M range on a medium term deal.)
We are in cap hell until 2021-2022.
If Willie had taken 6, Matthews had taken 11 and Marner takes 9.5, we would be in a much more comfortable situation coming into this season with an extra 2M in the bank. Especially because we would have some flexibility to add a player at the deadline. We may have even had a shot of extending Tyson Barrie for another 5 years+. But with the 8M he will be commanding next year, we can probably kiss him goodbye. |

He'll be the big fish on the FA list next year, so it makes sense that he might not be able to be kept (assuming he does as well here as he did in Col obviously). I think it comes down to Timmy and Sandin. If they are ready, he's probably gone. If not? They'll probably need to keep him to maintain the top-4. |
