As a fan, I would err on the side of caution with inflation to the cap, keeps realism in check. I would think 90-93 would be optimistic for that year. But we’re all just making guesses based on the past. We’ve all learned that we’re almost always wrong anyway, though. - RafiDRW
Quite true, whenever we speculate on an event or a trade, it is just that speculation - no more. I find it amusing when someone points out that your opinion is wrong, rather than say they disagree with it. The first round of the playoffs last year were an eye opener for me. More upsets in the first round than I can ever remember. I think results will be different this season - we'll see.

What if the leafs give him a lower salary for the 1st year? Like 6-7 million and when it’s pro-rated it comes in at the 10 aav? Then the following years it’s higher salary? Is that possible? - bryant
No the AAV is determined by the total value of the contract divided by the number of years. The first year is the only one that would be pro-rated. It will be higher if deal is signed after season starts.

Unluckiest bastard in the world.
Good player though. Great pick for a 4th rounder with already 2 NHL season played at 21 years old.

Anything can happen. Well, besides Ottawa not being a garbage fire of epic proportions. |

He’s insanely fun to watch no matter what he does. Even love his acting in movies. Malcolm in the Middle will always hold a special place, though. (frank)ing Hal. |

Hi Toolsie: You are correct. The salary in the first year of a long term agreement is pro-rated - based on how many games/days the player misses before signing the deal. The AAV (average annual value) is the main important number. Lets say a player makes $10 million a year ( say a $10 M x 6 contract) but he signs when a third of the season is over. The AAV is $10 million a year, in years 2-6 but in the first year it is 10 X 3/2 = $15 Million cap hit in the first year. - winsix
The average would be 9 million for years 2-6. |

That's what I said. His cap hit was 10 mill roughly in the first year, higher than the actual AAV.🤷♂️ |

That weird moment in the early 2000's when they tried to make him a thing. Same with Shillary Duff. - AdamFrench
Yep. Early 2000s was a poop storm of crappy actors trying to be shoved down our throats. Jessica Simpson. Mandy Moore. Lot of former music artists. |

Oof. That's not gonna be possible, is it? - systemtool
It was why I suggested earlier that the Leafs may have to trade him.
The offer-sheets become more threatening over time as a salary that does not yield 4-1sts may become un-matchable because of this year's cap effect and they lose him without getting the 4 1-sts or, they have to make another trade and they'll get fleeced because everyone knows they are in a bind.
It also means the team signing him needs the "extra" cap room this season, but if there is a team like that, the Leafs have to be wary.
On the other hand it is a double edged sword. If this continues into the season, and Marner really wants to stay here, the amount the Leafs can offer him becomes less as the season goes on.

Hes still young and had a down year. But when you have Marner Matthew's and Tavares around him I can see why you might view him as a B-lister. Hes an A level talent, but not elite or star player yet, if ever. - systemtool
I think Nylander had too much pressure when he came back. He was trying to live up to the deal and the expectations of fans and teammates.
I think the guy comes into camp and the season and shows why he got the deal he got.
All the haters were wrong about the leaf cap situation and how it would result in trading this guy or that guy. So I think they'll be wrong about Nylander as well. |

Waiting until next summer to get Dermott signed is a roll of the dice, since a productive campaign will increase his leverage to get a higher salary and as the William Nylander and Mitch Marner situations have shown, a failure of being proactive can be costly in the end.
We all know it's better for teams' cap situation to sign their young RFAs as early as possible. The players and their agents also know this. Which is why most of them play out their entire ELC before signing because they know it's the best way for them to get paid.
Every moron who says "Leafs should've signed Matthews and Marner before last season" are completely overlooking the fact that the players and agents are not morons. |

He has a ton of offensive talent and I'm sure he'll be good for at least 60 points this year. He does not have a very high hockey IQ and does not play an effective 200 foot game. I don't think that'll ever change completely but he'll likely improve in those areas over time as well.
He is worth his $7mil and we will see that from him this season. Then he will be traded. |
