If Marner wait as long as Willie to sign, then signs for 10M per - the cap hit the first season will be 14.76M.

Oof. That's not gonna be possible, is it?

Can someone help me understand something here.

Last year Nylanders cap hit was something like 10 million because he signed late in the season, even though his salary was much less.

Does this not mean Marner has to sign before the season starts or the Leafs cant afford to inflate his salary for this season and he might have to sit all year?

If Nylanders salary was roughly 7.5 but cap hit roughly 10 million, Marners cap hit maybe in the 11-14 million range if we wait till November or December.

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

Think it was the other way around.

No. Not with your LTIR or anything. If you trade Ceci, maybe.

Hi Toolsie: You are correct. The salary in the first year of a long term agreement is pro-rated - based on how many games/days the player misses before signing the deal. The AAV (average annual value) is the main important number. Lets say a player makes $10 million a year ( say a $10 M x 6 contract) but he signs when a third of the season is over. The AAV is $10 million a year, in years 2-6 but in the first year it is 10 X 3/2 = $15 Million cap hit in the first year.

I meant without taking away from the roster but yea he would be most expendable as a pending ufa. We need that RHD though so who knows.

Like the Sens, this contract is not a good situation.

It’ll be interesting to say the least. You guys are in a tough situation. Wish Salic would just sign Rantanen to 9 million for 8 years and just kick off this overblown bullshît parade.

The team is in a good situation, the cap is just a bit tight. I have no issue giving money to elite star players, its when you pay B-listers like Phaneuf and Lucic etc big money, that the situation is tough.

100million?
In three years?
I wouldnt place any bets on it just yet.

- Fakepartofme

No bets, just a guess based on the recent deals signed by NFL, NBA, MBL and Premier League soccer. The NHL TV deal will be 10 years old and it was a lowball deal. USA has roughly 10 times the population of Canada and signed a $2 billion dollar deal for 10 years. $200 M a year. Rogers signed a 12 year deal for $5.3 Billion. or $441.667 M a year. The US deal will go up significantly.

As a fan, I would err on the side of caution with inflation to the cap, keeps realism in check. I would think 90-93 would be optimistic for that year. But we’re all just making guesses based on the past. We’ve all learned that we’re almost always wrong anyway, though.

I agree, I think the approach by the Leafs is : This is how much money we can give you on an AAV now, what is more improtant to you? Have a good team where we can keep all our important players or do you want to have the biggest Richard on the team?

Nylander.

Hes still young and had a down year. But when you have Marner Matthew's and Tavares around him I can see why you might view him as a B-lister. Hes an A level talent, but not elite or star player yet, if ever.

What if the leafs give him a lower salary for the 1st year? Like 6-7 million and when it’s pro-rated it comes in at the 10 aav? Then the following years it’s higher salary? Is that possible?

Second tier level guys. Understand that completely. I think he’ll get back to 60 points this year.

No. It’s based on the average over all the years. Add the totals, divide by the number of years. Only way it’s smaller is if the money is lower overall and lowers the AAV throughout.
