I was googling around yesterday, as for the life of me I couldn't remember the name Bobby Holik.
Ended up stumbling upon an old Down Goes Brown article where he listed the worst free agent signings of all time. #1 was "basically any NYR free agent signing, ever."
He made a compelling case. If you think about it, 99% of UFA signings end up being disasters, and since the Rangers are so attractive to guys wanting to be media superstars, it makes for a bad combination for Rangers fans. - Atomic Wedgie
I'm hoping signing old stars and handing out NMC's to everyone died out with Slats finally gone.
Sure is plenty of awful deals to choose from, but Holik was one of the worst.

I swear to goodness, I remember this like it was yesterday:
I was incredibly pissed. Leafs were trying to sign him, and I thought that if the Rangers were going to give him $9 million X 5, why wouldn't the Leafs just offer him $10 million?
And because I'm stupid, I wondered the same thing about Brad Richards.

It's probably a curse for the NYR.

There were lots of terrible UFA signings, IMO the worst of all time has to be the 17 year $102 million deal that the Devils signed Kovalchuk to in 2010. They went from a playoff team to the dumpster pretty quickly and if Kovalchuk would not have decided to let them off the hook, the Devils would be looking at a massive cap hit until 2027.

Cap space goes so fast. Best example is Vegas, A year ago they had the most cap space, now the least, - RogerRoeper
one of the things they didnt have was a lot of elite players on ELC since they just started, they grabbed a bunch of good players, but they all quickly needed new contracts..which is costly without having the luxery of developing your own players to replace expensive older players
