I'm not sure how much teams will want UFA Hall, knowing his age and injury history. He's not OLD, but not young either. I keep thinking it would be great to get a haul from him, like it's an obvious choice.. so maybe other teams know it may be an obvious choice to not spend top dollar on Hall. He COULD workout for us, but there is definite risk.

What if it was a sign a trade to a one year deal? I'd imagine that alone will get a better, haul...

Vegas put 9.5 on Stone, Buf 9mil on Skinner, Philly 7 mil on Hayes (lol). Hall is getting paid no matter what.

sounds like he is interested in taking a bigger role in the player's union, which is beneficial for his career. but I guess we can also just assume that means he doesn't want to play for us any more and just contract the team already.

He’s going to sign a 7 year 90 mil contract with the rags

Seems a bit lopsided considering Hall is an MVP.

No. Marner is 5 years younger with RFA rights protecting the Devils beyond this year. It should also be noted that Marner put up more points this past season than Hall has ever accumulated. I think this would be a big win for the Devs if possible, especially having our top 3 All-Star forwards being 22 and under. That's how you build a Dynasty. No disrespect to Hall, but Marner would probably be a better fit going forward.

Pains me to say this, but a lot of what he says makes sense.

Your point of view doesn't make sense. The reaction of the fan base to a player in Hall's contract situation is completely natural. He is eligible to sign a monster contract right this second. He is on record of applauding his friend for controlling his own career direction, in Tavares, and doesn't seem in any rush to bring finality to the situation.

If you are running a team, you 100% have to prepare for life without this franchise player. That is the job. Waiting until the trade deadline puts you in a diminished position of leverage. If there is a trade on the table that brings brings a big return, you have to consider.

I'd almost recommend putting a trade together and approaching the player with both an extension offer and the trade offer and ask him to choose which option suits him best. No chance I start this season without resolution.

When players are on contract year - trading them in off season or trading them at deadline doesn't usually change value much.

This is why I mentioned earlier what if we sign him to one year (assuming he wants to leave) with the promise of trading him so a team has him more than a rental? He would help us out by getting more of a return.

He clearly wants to get to UFA, so no reason for him to sign anything. I just don't see it. If he gets injured this yer, his value falls through the floor in that situation.

I have to admit. If Hall drags this on far into the season then a trade must happen. Also I am agreeing with you with his injury history. Don’t get me wrong... Hall is an MVP caliber player, but I personally would not go above 11 mill per year on a 8 year deal.. and if Hall really wants to win he would think about how his contract will be affecting the whole team. I am all for players getting their pay... but real competitors want the whole team to succeed. Look at other leagues and how many guys take pay cuts just to see their team built the correct way. Look at Toronto and what I mess they have. I really think that Tavares deal is hurting more than helping...

I hear what you mean with him understanding contracts so team could win, but don't underestimate greed in pro sports . What we have going for us in not many team have that space.

would we be into taking on Backes at 6mil for this year and the next? We'd get some assets for it.. but it would also hurt us with his sluggish ass taking away a spot from one of our kids ready for the NHL.

eh.

looking at our defense situation after this season.. Severson, Subban, Smith, and once qualified.. Butcher (maybe Mueller, though I don't want him on the ice). We'll have some openings, especially on that left side.

Isn't it "tradition" that dmen play on the side they shoot? Righties play the right side. So why has Smith primarily been used on the right?

It's better to defend on the same side of your handedness, but for offense it's better to play off because if you're a right defenseman you're playing against a guy who is left handed so they have to play against their weak side. In theory of course, I don't know if you can prove this metrically however.

Carrick re-signed. 2 years, 1.5 mil per. Liked what he did at the end of last season.

Hard to dislike that deal, even as a 7th defenseman

I like him too as a 6/7. another dman on the right side though. You gotta think Smith starts on the left.
