There are still over 60 notable (I mean not great, but when I read the list, I know their names) RFAs that are unsigned. As you said, none of the big names have signed.
They can set the benchmark for Marner, not Matthews. - Monkeypunk
Agree that all of the top RFA's are waiting for the first shoe to drop. Seems to be the holdup at this point. Summer is barely getting started. Yawn. |

Trade Marner now. I’ve been a Leaf fan for over 50 years and like Marner! But! What the Leafs could get for him would put them way closer to being a cup contender, and for longer. If he needs that much cash, let someone else pay him. Time to cash in that chip. |

I think his agent really thought they'd have their choice of offer-sheets by now. - GreatGigInTheSky
I don’t see any offersheet coming. It would help the leafs to much.
No GM wants to hand out 4 1st rounders for only 4-5 year deal. It sounds like marner doesn’t want any long term deals. |

Mckenzie seems to think there will be a lot of holdouts this year too. |

Hear ya man. Not really looking forward to his next contract discussion at all. |

We trade Marner now... His ceiling is just too high. Look at what 16 & 91 did together in just their 1st season together, can they improve on that? Those two could be dominant together for years.
The only way a trade happens is if the Leafs received a SIGNIFICANT over-payment, and that's likely not happening.

summer is not over yet of course, but that should tell you the market.
If Mitch watch a 3-5 year deal its under 10. (more like 8-9.5)
If he wants over 10, its 6-8 |

If Marner wants a 5 year deal then he can sign for a front loaded deal for $8.5M AAV just like Aho did, who just happens to be an excellent comparable in terms of age, skill production, size and style of play.
No way Marner is worth $3M more per season over Aho. NO. WAY. |

You know what this blog about Rasmus Sandin needs?

If Marner was in Carolina he'd play for a pulled pork sandwich and a year's supply of moonshine and like it. |

Great, then we will just talk about when Sandins entry level deal is up and he is asking for 9 mil |

That’s why I don’t think an offer sheet comes. If it’s come under 10.5 even if it’s short term the leafs match.
Only way to get leafs to maybe not match would be long term bringing the number up, but from all accounts he doesn’t want long term (6-8) |

I must say.
It was brillant. - Scabeh
Maybe they'll increase the entry level contract scenario to 7 years and then players become full UFA? |

I guess anything can happen.
But I'm sure players will ask for superious leverage after the initial ELC. Because the current situation, where holding out is their only way out and arbitrator cannot be used, will get kinda silly. |

That'd be excellent news for the Leafs.
That would mean they drafted a first pairing defenseman. |

probably. ferris and p.marner are out in fantasy land.
once they get a reality bomb like this, panic is likely and they probably cave in short order.
my only issue - if it's actually p.marner driving the salary demands or mitch. if it's. p. than (frank) it, who cares.
if it's mitch, then this is a good way to build resentment and a likely trade down the road. - Tumbleweed
At that point you tell the Marner camp, he's not signing in Toronto and you get the best deal. you make him sit until it's what you've been looking for. Picks prospects etc etc... Dubas could just keep him sitting and sitting and sitting... Until he gets the package he wants. |

Owners won't want this.
You really want to sign a guy for 7 years, and then hope he becomes an NHL player?
It's unworkable. |

I think he meant as a determined max salary for the first 7 years. Not that all contracts would be that long. |

my thought is what team is going to meet his contract demands?
the gm's in edm and buf that handed out big rfa deals are gonzo.
i really don't know who would be likely to pay him +$11M.

It's a max 7 years... For your first rounders...
Other round drafted players would get less years... On the initial deal. |

What I mean is, to clarify, GMs could sign anyone they want to 7 years but I figure it would only ever be a first rounder that gets that kind of deal. |
