Gus wouldn't be looked at the same way he currently is IF this teams overall Defense wasn't as poor as it has been. If it is better overall people would be taking about Gus as a breakout player this year

But he danced the goalie so hard he ended up flat footed clear at the other end of the crease, and Dach is 6ft FIVE inches. ....... Kid was as skilled as anyone left at #3, maybe Zegras had an edge on him but that clip showed a huge reason the Hawks grabbed Dach.

No doubt just a clip but a look at what the NHL exec who was quoted by Powers said of Dach, "talk about physicality all you want but there are only a handful of players in the world that has Dach's combination of size, skating, hands, IQ, vision".

It's a tough call on whether to re-sign Gustafsson or trade him to get assets in return. Given the value he brings on offense, especially the PP, I wouldn't just let him walk for nothing. If he does show improvement in his defending, then a contract renewal at reasonable value is worth considering.

One factor to consider is whether the team defense improves this season. And not just marginally improve but significant strides of progress. So if the team continues to flounder defending in all areas of the ice and Gustafsson is still one of the main culprits despite generating offense like he did last season, then I would trade him for valuable pieces and move on to Boqvist at his ELC and use the money that would have gone to Gustafsson on a player (F or D) who plays strong defense.

Where is the love (for Gus?)
Don't hop on bus, Gus (to another city)
Don't have to make a new plan, Stan
Plays so sweet
The more the merrier (and points so to follow close the leaders in our playoff chase)
Gus might develop better consistency btw

A few Day 1 camp notes gathered across different sources:

- Soderlund is having visa issues so not at camp yet.
- Gravel is not medically cleared to play but is present at camp.
- Wise is skating but not doing drills; still rehabbing from shoulder surgery but says he will be ready for training camp.
- Nordgren and Foo participated off ice.
- Kunitz sat with management in the press box so thoughts are he may be earning a role within those ranks (or already has).

Keeping in mind the limited sample size of just a handful of drill videos so please take with a couple barges of salt, here are some personal observations from Day 1 camp:

- Dach and Entwistle both have that deceivingly awkward yet fluid skating stride of a tall, lanky right-handed shooter.
- Wise is moving well with speed.
- Hakkarainen is a pretty fluid skater; good on his pivots, edges, and reverses.
- Slavin skates well for a big body prospect; also very industrious on the forecheck or backcheck using his frame to his advantage.
- Krys and Beaudin are both excellent skaters making it look effortless; both also have active sticks and agile skating to shadow the opponent stride for stride taking away options.
- Mitchell looks fluid in his skating as well; good puck control and poise.
- Vlasic uses his long reach and tall body well defending in successive forechecks by Dach, Johnson, and Nylander; does not seem to skate with an awkward lankiness.
- Ess and Shea have decent skating; not stellar but not horrible either.
- Moberg really needs to work on his skating; lumbering and awkward in his pivots and edge work.

Fast forward 3+ years and this could be a future Blackhawks practice during the regular season: Boqvist, Nylander, Mitchell, Beaudin, Dach, and Vlasic (45).

The couple clips of Boqvist I saw - it looked like he was dancing on skates. That boy can skate. Shoots pretty good too.

Don't see Perlini on that list, screw him

Didn't someone point out a day or two ago that this was probably going to happen?

Something about becoming a UFA allows him to sign a 1 year prove it deal.

Dach's not legitimately 6'4"...he's a smurf!

Think it's more the camera angle that has Vlasic appearing to tower over Dach.

Perlini recieved a qualifying offer from the Hawks, so even if he doesn't sign it, they retain his rights. If Perlini doesn't sign by December 1, he is ineligible to play for the remainder of the season.

I thought any and all of the hcokeybuzz hawk fans who are going to attend the prospects camp competition might want this added fact and maybe they will do some Cole Moberg watching.
There looks like there is a little Shea weber to his game.

I know I stated before that he was on a fairly low talented squad last year, but I didn’t state much on how it affected his play. This is a big physical kid with really nice movement and feet, but you cannot overlook his keen offensive side that was stifled there. It's tough to project a late rounder whose rough edges start smoothing the rest of the way in. (I thought when I watched in the Dub, he was had good edging and pivots, but I wasn't trying to rank him as a early draft able prospect but simply one of those "if he comes along" types.
He started his year on the power play and was a really good teammate, who surveyed and always tried to wait wait and then make the best pass to the open man.
And he did.
The problem was that his teammates were unable to follow through with their attempts, didn’t get off good shots, or make the next pass most of the time the puck went over to the opposing team killing the PP.
So what happened, is he stopped.
I would think he was frustrated bob the fact this kept happening, so he simply started taking the shot instead.
That telegraphed the play more, so I am very interested in how he fares being surrounded by a few more higher skilled forwards playing in from of him.

Just wanted this late selection got some eyes and a bit of discussion, but not to the extent the huge Blackhawk website growth and its bloggers seemed to give Dylan Olsen based on his hid second round selection their expert praise and plaudits w/o watching him very much.

I was correcting the original Tweet that had the player he was up against as a defenseman...yeah and I totally agree it is special when you can defat a nimble big man that has none in their system...

yeah too bad Powers and Pronman and the rest weren't all in when they were on the other two train tracks...lol!

There's a misconception out there that not signing a QO makes a player a UFA. That's not true. Perlin, having not signed his QO, is still a RFA and the Hawks still have his rights.

I think as long as the QO is sent out or received by a certain date the team reserves the player's rights. Now if the team is late with the QO the player(s) do become UFAs as we saw happen in 2009 when with Byfuglien and I think Versteeg and maybe Bickell?

Yes Paul, I believe we are on the same page. A more recent example was with Kampf this summer. He was not given a QO, became an UFA, but signed with the Hawks anyway.
