I kind of wish there was still some variation from rink to rink throughout the league. Be nice if there were some small idiosyncrasies that might make things a little more interesting, and make for a truer home ice advantage. It’s one of the best things about baseball.

Like boards that angle in some fashion? Tal's Hill at one of the goal nets?

And the showers in the visitors' locker room selectively had no hot water, IIRC from the Celtic days.

There were all kinds of little annoyances and home cooking both on and off the ice at each building back in the day. These days not as much, but some home cooking still exists.

Depending on how good your club was offensively or defensively bigger or smaller nets?

That's all I see too.

I've seen the picture over the past few months here. What's it from?

Well, let’s not get carried away. I was just talking about some minor variations. Set a minimum and maximum width, a minimum and maximum length, and a minimum and maximum distance between all of the painted lines.

Remember when the rinks had one penalty box? There were some great altercations, especially after a line brawl on the ice and they all ended up in same penalty box.

You can't imagine how well I remember that.

Another guy who would remember that is Wiz. There used to be an Andy Frain usher between the players, and Wiz knew the head usher who made those assignments.

I’ve searched all over the inter webs for a video of the time Steve Smith tried to demolish the glass separating the two boxes to get at the guy on the other side. It was the most livid I’ve ever seen a player on the ice.

Anyone else remember that, or better yet have a link to a clip? I can’t even remember who he was trying to get at or why he was so incensed.

And the penalty box was like the benches no glass separating it from the ice.

What I remember most about penalties back in the day (late 50s / 60s) was that because of all of the fighting - and no real "3rd man in" penalties - the penalty boxes would be filled with skaters - 4 or 5 from each team - and there was a lot of 3X3 play.

BTW - has there always been a long-change second period - I don't recall hearing much about it back then.

In the old days shifts were longer, 2 minutes as opposed to the 30-45 seconds now, so less shift changes needed, and the center line offside made it easier for the team without the puck to change.

A big Russian named Victor Kozlov (i think) suckered Smith and there was a tussle. They came to the box in the first year in the new building. They were still engineering all the little details of a multi-use facility. In an effort to make the building usable for hockey sooner than later they used vise grip clamps to secure the partititon between the visitors box and the center area where the operations table is. That acrylic plexiglass is heavy stuff, so when Smitty (who is tall) came charging over and shoved the glass up rather high the leverage he generated popped the clamps and the partition fell down. The look on Kozlov's face was just priceless. He might have poop himself. It was a wild scene.

I was correcting the original Tweet that had the player he was up against as a defenseman...yeah and I totally agree it is special when you can defat a nimble big man that has none in their system...

yeah too bad Powers and Pronman and the rest weren't all in when they were on the other two train tracks...lol!

Gotchya, Wiz............ I do hesitate to post most times cuz I usually don't read thru all the pages and risk not getting the context of a post. Did not see that tweet but looking at the clip here I wondered who that Dman was. You answered that, it was not a Dman.

But Dach sure did freeze the goalie. And watching clips of the kid in jrs and the WJC his reach is a real problem for goalies in tight and with his nimble feet and hands is a legit threat in the slot.

Pucks "frozen" along the boards by two opposing players led to more faceoffs and opportunities for line changes also.

Sure there was, but back in the day the benches were not seperated by much like they are now for knuckleheads like Piere McGuire. So the doors weren't as far away.

Interesting tidbits from the Athletic article about Wise:

Injuries have robbed Jake Wise of much of his last two seasons. But the intriguing Blackhawks prospect now believes they were the best thing for him. [I believe this comment was from someone who tweeted about the article, not by the article's author]

“He was a stud, he was a king. You saw him and knew this is a first-rounder, for sure. This is a top-five kid. He could have been first overall."

As one Hall of Famer put it, "I’m telling you, it’s going to be a steal. An absolute steal."

I would not be surprised by this one point. Guys always play better in a contract year because they wanna go out and get their money while they can. Plus, I've been saying for awhile that the biggest difference in this team next year will be having a full training camp under Colliton to have the system down going into the season. Changing systems mid season is very hard to do (especially when most of the guys have played the same system for a decade).

Man that's gonna be interesting to follow if he does. How much money is a PP and offensive D-man worth with only two years of experience behind his belt gonna get on the open market

- Savetheembers33

It will be interesting what the market bears for UFA's next year if the cap goes up only another 1.5M as some project. Look at some of the free agent signings this year. Dzingel signs for about 3M+ instead of 5. Gardiner was looking for 7M and will probably be happy to sign for 5M.

A lot of us were speculating that next year if he has a repeat season Gus would garner 5M. What if the market bears only 3M? Do the Hawks re-sign him for that amount for 2-3 years if they have the cap space? If they do, do they protect him from the expansion draft in two summers? Also by keeping him a position is denied to a Boqvist/Beaudin/Mitchell.

The future Gus saga will he interesting.

I remember chicken wire at the St. Louis Arena for the Braves in the early 60s - going only a couple of feet above the boards.

This.

Downers Grove Ice Arena is supposed to be the same size and rumor has it that the old Stadium boards ended up there. Wouldn't surprise me if old Dollar Bill tried to recoup a couple of bucks by reselling the boards.
