Ehlers is a left winger that had 37 points last year.

60 and 64 the previous 2 years.

Which Ehlers am I getting and why his points fall off a cliff?

We also have a bunch of left wingers

Skinner
Olofsson
Johnsson
Sheary
Vesey
Girgs

Ehlers doesn’t seem like a good fit. Trending downward and too many left wingers

And for the love of god. No a left winger will not play right wing 100% of the year. So don’t force it

Cause he’s not anything great?
But may hold some value.

He’s average at best. Better suited for 4th line duties.

Buffalo is the exception to the rule. Every team that drafts well has sustained success. The Red Wings made the playoffs 20+ times in a row. The majority of cup contenders have most of their rosters comprised of home grown talent. Take a look at our own division (Tampa, Boston, and Toronto).

Drafting well and hoarding picks and prospects are two monumentally different things. Detroit and St Louis(the other team that made the playoffs for like 25 straight years) drafted well using its own, mid/late round picks.

There are 7 guys that actually see regular time in the NHL. I bet that’s actually pretty close to the average number of draft picks that pan out. There’s a chart you’ve all seen before.

Picks are *not* as valuable as most people think.

And statistically 2OA has a lesser chance of busting, thus having a higher rating. Statistics!!!

He’s not trending downward
Ehlers points were down bc he was hurt & only played 62 games

Btw, he scored 21goals last year
That’s a 28goal pace

And besides Skinner, we have zero LWs that we know will be productive for us long term
Ehlers would be a great fit

So then why do we need another left winger? I see no room or need for another left winger

This.
No want Ehlers, not that he's bad. Presently, the need presently, is at 2C and 1 and 2 RWs.
In fact, make Sheary a requirement for teams to take in any deal...we'll accept a RW to balance the Cap hit.

Johansson is here for 2 seasons & will be 31 to start his next deal
1) he’s not the long term answer at LW2
2) he’s more of a 3rd loner on a contender anyways
3) and as a Vet, i don’t see why he couldn’t be a RW and be productive- esp if he’s with Jack & Skinner

Vesey could only be here for a year
But even if we did extend him, he’s can also play RW and also is more of a 3rd liner

The only potential LW2 we MIGHT have is Olofsson, and he also has played RW

OR

We can trade for Ehlers...
-who also has played RW
-is only 23
-is a proven mid20s goal scorer,
with 30goal + potential-
esp with the center talent he’d get to play w/ here
-he’s under contract for 6years, at only 6mil per
And most of all
*he’d clearly, without a doubt, be our 2nd best LW behind Skinner

So yeah...
shift the “ok” players around & let Ehlers play with Mitts or Cozens
That will be a hell of a 2nd line going forward

Or play him on the RW with Jack & Skinner even
Maybe that wouldn’t work,
but maybe he’d blow up with those guys
Or shift Skinner to RW
Or shift Skinner to LW2

Ehlers is a young, fast, goal scoring winger on a great contract
Pretty sure we can find a way to add that kind of player to our team

Years ago, with Modo. But playing him or Skinner at RW is... sub-optimal
